New IRPP analysis shows Mark Carney’s January mission to China will significantly alleviate pressures in many Prairie communities.
After a year of steep tariffs and collapsing export prices, a new Canada–China trade framework could offer real relief for communities dependent on agriculture and other targeted products.
Not all sectors benefit, however. Pork, for example, representing about five per cent of Canadian agri-food exports to China in 2024, will still face 25 per cent tariffs. But the agreement could be a lifeline for many Prairie regions.
