I met Elèn over ten years ago during a student job. We clicked instantly, forgetting time falling into endless conversations, bonding over our shared passion for craft and design, and laughing at how often our quirks seemed to mirror each other.
Years later, we both turned our passions into our work. We often talked about creating something together and last weekend it finally happened.
The production was a bit ‘houtje touwtje’, very intuitive, but that’s exactly what suits us. We had no clear plan; we just figured it out as we went and let everything unfold naturally. It really felt like a reflection of our friendship.
We kept finding links everywhere, tiny bridges between materials, gestures, memories, and every little discovery made us so happy.
There was so much joy in this project!
Thanks for the beautiful pictures @rutgergeleijnse
And the wonderful space @marlthespace
And thanks to everyone who came to visit. Really means a lot!
This painting began with a shape I borrowed from one of my favourite Barbara Hepworth sculptures. The balance she seemed to carry through all her work and her mindful way of living and creating, have always fascinated me.
As soon as I started drawing the shape, it reminded me of the feeling of a calm state of mind. Giving me the idea that this painting should capture the essence of ‘Equilibrium’.
When I arrive in that state, I feel warm and yellow like the sun. I see harmony rather than symmetry. I feel comforted and protected. It was these feelings and colours that I tried to weave into that first shape.
Resulting in my homage to this ever inspiring artist.
