Our very own IPS All-City Band is gearing up for the 70th annual Lucas Oil
@500festival on Saturday, May 23 🥁🎶
As one of only five bands in the nation to receive an annual invitation, these students are ready to represent Indianapolis on a massive stage. With over 200,000 spectators expected along the route, it’s more than just a performance—it’s a proud IPS tradition!
Set for Saturday, May 23, in downtown Indianapolis, the 70th annual parade will feature 13 marching bands as part of this year’s theme, “Racing Through History.” Among them is the IPS All-City Band, one of only five bands in the nation to receive an annual invitation.
For Director Josh Goodman, marching in the parade is an honor that reflects both excellence and tradition.
“Being one of five bands that receives an annual invitation to the parade is the most meaningful performance we have all year,” Goodman said. “In one day, the marching band represents IPS for more people than every extracurricular and athletic activity combined for the whole year. It creates immense pride in our performers and helps them develop a connection with the community.”
As rehearsals intensify, IPS students aren’t just preparing for a performance—they’re preparing to represent their city on one of its biggest stages, he said.
That connection will be on full display as more than 200,000 spectators line the two-mile parade route, alongside colorful floats, giant balloons, special guests, and all 33 drivers competing in the Indianapolis 500.
For Goodman, it’s also personal. Having grown up attending race festivities with his family, this opportunity brings back memories.
“The 500 has always been a special event for me growing up. My family has had tickets in turn one of the race for decades. To be a part of the festivities in this way is really a full circle moment for me!”
