RF Spectrum under threat - again!
It appears that the telecoms companies are interested in acquiring more spectrum and they are currently making noises about taking over the 450 - 700 MHz range, which would of course have a drastic effect on our use of radio mics and IEMs.
This is happening on a global basis and our representative in this process from the UK is Ofcom, who have put out a call for input from our industry.
Ofcom is today seeking views and evidence on the future needs of the Programme Making and Special Events (PMSE) sector and how they might be met in the future.
We would encourage all our members to use the link above to download the Ofcom CFI document and fill it in and submit it by the end of March, when this consultation period finishes.
We need as many RF users as possible to stand up and be counted or we will be steamrollered off the spectrum, as we were with the ‘Digital Dividend’ process 15 years ago.
Please note that not all the questions are applicable to the audio world, so only answer the ones that you feel are relevant to your work.
Also, the questionnaire is written in the finest bureaucratic language, so we are working on some guidance notes on how to interpret the questions and hope to get that out to all members later this week.
We would also encourage all RF users to make sure that their UK PMSE Licence is up to date, as Ofcom will use the number of licence holders as the number of RF users in the UK and if Ch 38 is sold off, only licence holders will receive compensation towards buying new radio mics and IEM kit.

It’s a cold February Saturday and Brentford FC are playing their Premier League game against Brighton & Hove Albion at home. The murmur of the crowd is burgeoning with expectation and Russell Mason has invited us along to join him on the TV gantry armed with 3 different microphone arrays fed into Reaper on a laptop via Dante. Russell is doing a side- by-side comparison between the Eigenmike 64, the Voyage Audio Spatial Mic and a brand new, only just released, Shure DCA901 on loan from the good people at Everything Audio. The results of Russell's experimentation can be heard in his presentation at the IPS training weekend (14th - 15th March) but in the meantime, stick your headphones on for a sample from the Eigenmike 64 mic array. It’s mixed in 7.0.4 and in this clip, rendered as a binaural mix.

Dubbing Mixer Andrew Wilson is part of an innovative research project at Bristol University that used an advanced sound capture setup (including a PCMA-3D mic rig) to record sound during two live music performances for playback in the university's purpose built 'Smart Cinema'. Andrew will discuss the concept and workflow of the project and delve into the Pro Tools session to show how he created a Dolby Atmos mix to recreate, as faithfully as possible, the live-audience experience.
Technical Guru Mike Ransome of Everything Audio has built numerous Dante rigs for many TV shows (Britain's Got Talent, Love is Blind, The Jury, Murder Trial). In this session he will show us some good practices, some less so, and a few common 'gotchas' that might turn things a bit ugly.

Sound recordist Sara Lima will talk about her work on the documentary film The Reason I Jump. Collaborating with sound artist and designer Nick Ryan, she used a range of spatial recording techniques to help shape the film’s distinctive sonic world. The resulting soundtrack gives the audience a subliminal, immersive sense of the perspectives of people with nonverbal autism, earning Sara a BIFA for best sound in 2020. Sara will talk about the concept of the film from a sound perspective, describe her technical choices and demonstrate what can happen when post and location sound work together collaboratively.
