🌐The 11th NPT Review Conference will begin at the end of this month. Let’s take a look at what the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons stands for, and what challenges it faces as we prepare for the conference. 🇺🇳 ⚠️The last time the NPT reached a consensus outcome was in 2010, when states expressed deep concern for the continued humanitarian risk posed by nuclear weapons. The treaty, often hailed as the pillar of the non-proliferation regime, faces a lot of strain and faltering credibility with increased aggression around nuclear sites, a lack of progress on disarmament, and proliferation risks abound. 🧑‍⚕️IPPNW’s delegation to the Review Conference will push for urgent action to reverse the risk of nuclear war and advance complete disarmament. Stay tuned to hear more from our delegates about our recommendations for peace and health.🕊⚕ #worldpeace #disarmament #unitednations #iran #ukraine #nonproliferation #health #npt #nonukes

As uncertainty continues within the NPT Review Conference, with heated debates around outcome language, IPPNW calls on states to assert that decisions taken by NPT Review Conferences remain binding past review cycles until superseded or revoked. States cannot use the current lack of consensus and agreement to back down from binding decisions and recommendations that were agreed previously. This includes previous disarmament commitments and the 64 point action plan to strengthen the treaty which was agreed at the 2010 Review Conference. Josefin, Director of Swedish Physicians Against Nuclear Weapons, joins us outside of UNHQ to explain. At the NPT Review Conference, we are urging the P-5 to establish concrete and timebound disarmament actions, in line with their obligations and commitments under Article 6. Magritte Gordaneer with Physicians for Social Responsibility joins us inside the UNHQ to explain what this means. To urgently reduce the risk of nuclear war, and maintain credibility of the NPT, this must begin with an agreement by the United States and Russian governments to abide by the limits of the expired New START Treaty. Curious about what we are doing at the NPT? Check out our pinned post to see all of our recommendations to NPT states! #peace #health #npt #newSTART #disarmament #unitednations #advocacy

The NPT Review Conference Continues! 🇺🇳 Maja Fjellvær Thompson with IPPNW Norway 🩺joins us at UNHQ to share why we are speaking with States at the NPT about the importance of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. The TPNW provides a legal pathway to achieve the disarmament obligations of the NPT's article 6, which have become stalled under the NPT alone. It was negotiated specifically to be complementary to the NPT. The majority of States in the NPT are also party to the TPNW. We are especially encouraging nuclear armed states and their allies to acknowledge its value and complementarity. In November, we look forward to the TPNW's first Review Conference. Maja is joining IPPNW delegates asking all States to engage productively with this Treaty and participate in or observe the conference.🕊 #npt #UnitedNations #Nuclearweapon #peace #health #advocacy #tpnw #disarm

AI and Nuclear Weapons? No thanks!🚫 This NPT Review Cycle, something we are watching carefully is conversations around AI and nuclear systems. IPPNW is calling for a permanent firewall between AI technologies and nuclear weapons command and control. We cannot allow algorithms to make decisions about the fate of humanity. There have been several moments throughout history where human judgement has overriden machine errors and averted a nuclear war. Jienna Foster joins us at UNHQ in New York from the IPPNW Geneva Liaison Office to explain why the integration of artificial intelligence and automation into nuclear decision making would mark a new era of exponential risk to humankind. You can read more about IPPNW's work along the nexus of nuclear and AI at IPPNW.org/ai #NPT #AI #nuclear #unitednations #AItechnology #peace #health #nuclearweapons

The NPT continues and so does IPPNW's work pushing States for an outcome! Clara Levin with Swedish Physicians Against Nuclear Weapons steps out of the UN to tell us why States must affirm that both horizontal and vertical proliferation is a risk to the NPT and the planet. ➡️Horizontal proliferation refers to new states or actors acquiring nuclear weapons who did not already possess them. ⬆️Vertical proliferation, however, refers to the advancement, modernization, and increased stockpiling by nuclear weapons states. Every nuclear weapon state under the NPT is participating in vertical proliferation, risking the integrity of the NPT. #npt #UnitedNations #proliferation #Nuclearweapon #peace #health #Advocacy

Several IPPNW members and co-founders have signed onto a statement declaring President Trump too unstable to remain in office. The authors cite mental instability, coupled with his sole, unchecked authority to launch nuclear weapons, which makes him a clear and present danger to the safety of all Americans. The full statement, which was read into the Congressional Record on April 30, 2026, was signed by 36 medical professionals. Read more on peaceandhealthblog.com

The last time the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty achieved a consensus outcome was 16 years ago⏰. In the 2010 outcome, States expressed their deep concern at the continued humanitarian risk posed by the existence of nuclear weapons. As the nuclear weapon states remain in gridlock on their disarmament obligations, IPPNW calls for all NPT States to reaffirm this outcome and center humanitarian impacts in all debate.🩺🕊 IPPNW Student member, Sofia Vitale, joins the delegation in New York to push states to reaffirm their commitment to humanitarian disarmament. #peace #health #npt #UnitedNations #humanitarian #advocacy #nonukes
