#YDC2025 | Modern Animals by Mook Yip Wai Lam @ipmook
“Pressure clings to you like a shadow – when you’re holding onto the subway handrail and almost lose your balance, thoughts flash through your mind: the boss’s looming deadlines, tomorrow’s unfinished presentations, and the subtle entanglements of workplace relationships. Can you really endure it all?”
Fashion designer Mook Yip’s collection, Modern Animals, fuses human and animal characteristics to create a monstrous aesthetic that depicts the workplace as an urban jungle. In a crowded subway train, workers flock to the office like herds of animals. The moment they step into the office, they transform into “Modern Animals,” relying on their instincts to compete and survive.

The collection features shirts, trousers and suits as its foundation, incorporating various office symbols to create dynamic silhouettes of the workers. Drawing inspiration from the collision between animals’ primal power and the coldness of urban life, the designs feature grotesque cuts and contrasting materials to showcase the diverse faces of workers from the bottom to the top, and their physical and mental exhaustion as they toil like animals in this concrete jungle. One look is inspired by the Japanese anime series Attack on Titan, using the image of an overworked horse as a metaphor for the oppressive workplace. The design features saddle-like restraints combined with stiff leather and straps to convey the heaviness of being bound by work, while streamlined tailoring expresses resilience amid the struggle. Other looks use deconstructed fabrics and exaggerated proportions to create a visual language that is both familiar and bizarre.
Modern Animals uses a satirical fashion vocabulary to explore the absurd nature of workplace survival. Here Mook juxtaposes the struggles of office workers with the wildness of animals, exploring the many facets of humanity under pressure. While paying tribute to the souls fighting in the concrete jungle, she also hopes to provoke thoughts on survival and self-worth.

“drain the milk”
In this concrete jungle, you’re working like a cow, yet being completely drained dry. Do you even remember that deadline your boss was pushing, the proposal due tomorrow, and the falling debris from the building outside? Have you managed to finish it all?
