Today, we hosted a seminar by Verónica I. Dorero at the IPBLN.
Title: ‘A Molecular Perspective of Celiac Disease: Linking Peptide Nanostructures, Innate Immunity, and the Microbiome’.
Gluten-related disorders (GRDs) are a group of diseases that occur after eating gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley, rye, and related grains. The most common GRDs are celiac disease (CD), wheat allergy (WA), and non-celiac gluten sensitivity (NCGS). These conditions involve abnormal immune responses to gluten-containing foods, which may lead to intestinal and systemic symptoms. In CD, gluten ingestion triggers an adaptive immune reaction characterized by T-cell activation and the generation of anti-tissue transglutaminase and anti-endomysial antibodies. This immune cascade causes damage to the small intestinal mucosa, often seen as villous atrophy and crypt hyperplasia. Patients can present with gastrointestinal symptoms such as diarrhea and malabsorption, but extraintestinal features like fatigue are also common, and in some cases, individuals may remain asymptomatic. CD is strongly associated with genetic predisposition, particularly the HLA-DQ2 and/or HLA-DQ8 alleles, but 30% of the general population carries these alleles; the worldwide prevalence of CD is 1%. Therefore, other environmental factors account for the onset of disease.
We are interested in the early stages of disease development, where the chemical behavior of gluten peptides and their interactions with the innate immune system and the microbiome may play a significant role. The aim is to develop therapeutic or nutritional approaches for prevention and treatment, grounded in a profound understanding of the biochemistry of gluten peptides. She has presented their latest results.

Today, Dr. Arturo López Castel (professor and senior researcher in Human Translational Genomics at the University of Valencia) gave a seminar
Title: “From a genetic repeat to a clinical trial: translational science in action”.
Dr. Arturo López Castel is Professor and senior researcher in Human Translational Genomics at the University of Valencia, with over 30 years of experience spanning academia and biotechnology. His research focuses on rare diseases, genetic instability, and therapeutic search and developments, with a long‑standing commitment to myotonic dystrophy. Trained at the Autonomous University of Barcelona and The Hospital for Sick Children (Toronto), and with biotech industry leadership experience, he currently leads multidisciplinary and multicenter translational initiatives that connect molecular mechanisms to clinical applications.
The lecture traces the full journey from the discovery of an abnormal genetic repeat expansion to its translation into a clinical trial, using myotonic dystrophy type 1 as a case study. Drawing on over 20 years of research by the Human Translational Genomics group at the University of Valencia, it illustrates how understanding the molecular mechanism is only the starting point, and examines the key scientific, technical, and regulatory challenges involved in turning basic research into effective therapies. The talk highlights translational science as a crucial link between bench and bedside, particularly in the field of rare diseases.
