The moment of truth is finally here. It’s been the better part of a decade since Star Wars graced the big screen. At that time, fans were still watching season one of The Mandalorian, the franchise was just finding its footing on the small screen, and we’d seen five films in five years. Star Wars was everywhere. No one would have guessed then that seven years would have to pass before we all stepped into a theater for a new Star Wars movie, and TV characters would be the new stars. And yet, that’s what’s about to happen. The Mandalorian and Grogu opens next week but held its world premiere and other advanced screenings on Thursday night. Out of that, fans and critics alike were allowed to weigh in on social media ahead of full reviews. Tap our link in bio for more first reactions. 'The Mandalorian and Grogu' is in theaters on May 22. Lego’s Lord of the Rings line has already given us some pretty hefty sets, from the elaborate halls of Rivendell to the dark spires of Barad-dûr. Even its smallest set, taking us there and back again to Bag End, was still pretty sizeable. But now its latest addition is blowing them all out of the water—in both piece count and price. After months of rumors, today Lego officially announced the next big set in the Lord of the Rings line: the capital of Gondor, Minas Tirith. Clocking in at 8,278 pieces, it’s now the biggest Lord of the Rings set the company has made so far (beating Rivendell by over two thousand pieces!), and one of the biggest sets by piece count it has ever released. Rather than a traditional playset-style set Rivendell or The Shire weres, or even the half-way display/playset style used by Barad-dûr, Minas Tirith will depict the entirety of the White City on the exterior as a micro-scaled display piece, capturing the tiered rings of the city, from its gates all the way up to the fountain court where the White Tree of Gondor resides. However, by opening up the lowest walls and flipping the whole build around, you can reveal a minifigure-scaled rendition of the streets of the city, and perhaps more crucially, a build of Minas Tirith’s Tower Hall, housing the throne room where Denethor resided as Steward of Gondor… until the return of the king, of course. It’s been a month since the new Avatar movie leaked online, and in that month Paramount has only been quiet about its approach to trying to quell the leak’s spread (and quieter still about how it is promoting a movie that’s meant to be out in five months, but that’s par for the course with it and Avatar). But now the studio has an even weirder headache to consider: people are taking the leaked movie and burning it to Blu-ray discs for sale. Although Paramount has refused to publicly comment on the leaks of Legend of Aang, choosing instead to hit leaked clips and releases of the Avatar Studios film through copyright takedowns, the film’s persistence online has taken a new step recently, as multiple Blu-ray copies of the movie have started being listed for sale on eBay. Last week, Marvel Comics announced the coming of Midnight, which everyone managed to guess was going to be one of two things: either a new horror imprint from the publisher or Marvel looking over at DC’s Absolute universe and realizing it wants in on some of that. Turns out it’s a bit of a mix of both, but with one added surprise: For the first time since the Krakoan Age, superstar writer Jonathan Hickman is leading an X-Men title again. Announced today by Marvel, Midnight will kick off this summer and into fall with three new titles: Midnight X-Men, by Hickman and Matteo Della Fonte; Midnight Fantastic Four, by Benjamin Percy and Kev Walker; and Midnight Spider-Man, by Phillip Kennedy Johnson and Scie Tronc. All three books will help launch a new universe within Marvel’s vast cosmic web of parallel realities, freeing the Midnight books to give their own spin on their characters and lore. The spin, of course, is going to be very spooky. Read all about it at our link in bio. Story: James Whitbrook #xmen #marvelcomics #superheroes #comicbooks

It’s been almost seven years since Star Wars was in movie theaters, but it’s not been for a lack of trying from Lucasfilm. That whole period was jam-packed with project announcement after project announcement, each of them hoping to be the film that would herald the galaxy far, far away’s return to the box office. In fact, it was almost a surprise when we learned that the film most likely to do it would come out of nowhere and become The Mandalorian and Grogu—a surprise still being felt by its director. But that doesn’t mean he doesn’t have some inkling as to why it may have happened. “I’m not sure what, exactly, why we were asked to do this,” Jon Favreau recently told GamesRadar about why The Mandalorian and Grogu became that unlikely movie. Unsurprisingly, the “and Grogu” part of that film title is what he’s landed on as the reason. “I suspect it was because these are characters that people, even who hadn’t seen Star Wars, may be aware of, especially Grogu. Baby Yoda was everywhere,” Favreau continued. Read the full story at our link in bio. Story: James Whitbrook #starwars #mandalorian #grogu #babyyoda #yoda

The Matrix Resurrections kind of came and gone after its release at the tail end of 2021. But in its wake, Warner Bros. and the film’s co-producer Village Roadshow got into a legal battle over how it came out—specifically, its dual theatrical/HBO Max launch that Village argued had devalued the larger Matrix franchise. Over the last few years, this back-and-forth played out in Warner Bros.’ favor, despite Village Roadshow’s best efforts. It’s now been reported that as of earlier this week, Village paid out $57 million in damages to WB. At first, it was on the hook to pay $125 million to buy a 50% share of Resurrections, but that was whittled down after an appeal determined the studio couldn’t be forced to buy said shares. People who see Mortal Kombat II are probably going to enjoy it. It’s just that type of fun, irreverent film that summer audiences crave. But you know who is really going to enjoy it? People who didn’t like the 2021 film it’s following. This sequel picks up several key pieces from that film, but in some very pointed ways ignores many others. And that was a decision made early on. Jeremy Slater, the writer of the film, talked to us about this very thing. Slater is best known for creating the underrated Exorcist TV show from a few years back, as well as his work on Marvel Studios’ Moon Knight, and came to Mortal Kombat II having no involvement with the first film. That fresh perspective allowed him and the team to craft a film that he hopes everyone, from hardcore fans of the franchise to people completely unaware of what “Finish Him” or “Get Over Here” mean, will love. And, he’s now returning for a third film. Read our interview with Jeremy Slater at our link in bio. Story: Germain Lussier #mortalkombat #finishhim #gamers #movies #interview

Thirty years ago this summer, the first book in George R.R. Martin‘s A Song of Ice and Fire series, A Game of Thrones, was released. While fans aren’t getting Winds of Winter to celebrate its thirtieth, they’re getting something pretty neat to mark the occasion that’s far from a consolation prize: a special rerelease. Folio Society (which already makes pretty decadent editions of the series) is publishing 1,000 limited-edition single-volume editions of A Game of Thrones, signed by Martin himself. According to People, the 872-page single-volume rerelease will feature artwork by Jonathan Burton as well as a clamshell box, rolled map, and a “dragon leather” binding. Darth Vader doesn’t show up in Star Wars lightly. The key figure in George Lucas‘ six-film Star Wars saga has already had quite the run but, in the years since, has been deployed only in very key instances. He fought his apprentice on Star Wars Rebels. He massacred rebels in Rogue One. He even gives Cal Kestis a good scare in a few video games. This week, Vader returned with maybe his most brutal moment yet, and Lucasfilm president Dave Filoni explained the cold, calculated reasoning behind it. The Lucasfilm president spoke about the finale of 'Maul: Shadow Lord' in Los Angeles this week. Read what he said at our link in bio.
