WINTER
This is my third seasonal time-lapse film and the second collaboration with composer Jim Perkins. It is the culmination of 5 years of shooting across New York State and Montreal, Canada.
Because of the nature of snow falling and ice freezing, Winter is more frenetic and fast paced than my other 2 films.
It is by far the hardest piece I have ever produced. At times I was shooting with up to 6 cameras and 4 sliders. I also lost 2 drones in the process.
All elements were captured by camera with some shots requiring a significant amount of compositing.

FALL
This is the film that started it all.
I shot Fall in 2011 for 2 reasons. 1) I wanted to capture my favourite season in New York before I moved to LA for good where there are no seasons. 2) I needed something to occupy my time as I tried to give up drinking. I wanted to replace drinking with something positive.
I shot it for myself and never expected anything to come from it but surprisingly it went viral and people loved it. I kept getting asked what I was going to shoot next (even Central Park Conservancy got in touch to ask). I never intended time-lapse to become a regular thing but I loved the experience and process of making it so much and I was blown away by how much pleasure it gave people that I decided to continue with time-lapse.
LA didn’t stick - I moved back to NYC within a year (it turns out I really couldn’t live without the seasons). But the not drinking and the time-lapse did stick and my life is greatly improved for it.

Diamond Beach, Iceland 2022
I took my slider all the way to Iceland to get this shot. I went to the beach the night before and used the Sunseeker app to figure out exactly where the sun would rise. In the course of shooting a lot of other photographers / tourists rudely set up their cameras in front of me and blocked my view. It took me a lot of time to remove them all from the shot. This reminds of the the stories of over tourism we’re hearing a lot about these days.
It wasn’t all bad though. A local photographer @thor_photography kindly let me know that the waves could bring the ice crashing into my camera. This did indeed happen but because I’d been warned I was able to hold onto my setup to stop the shot from being ruined.
