In anticipation of #SXSW, strolling the streets of Austin, sussing out big ideas and deep discussions about movies, music, and technology, we here at Inverse had a bit of a tech talk. We wanted to get to the bottom of how film and TV redefined the way humanity interacted with the world in the 20th century and what technological advances look like here in the 21st. How has emerging technology changed Hollywood? How has it changed the stories we tell ourselves?
Looking through the dual lenses of science fiction and filmmaking fact, Inverse tackles the state of Hollywood Tech in 2026 in a special issue. To cover innovative techniques that are redefining storytelling, we watched some new AI docs, geeked out with producers about AR walls, and talked to puppeteers and filmmakers about their irreplaceable craft. We got our friends from NASA on the phone to talk about spaceships on the big screen, and went back in time to rediscover the art of the big screen explosion. Finally, we flew to Austin, where we are now, bringing you insight to how Hollywood is following Arthur C. Clark’s third law, that “any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.” What is movie magic anyway, but tech that tells a story?

Here’s the official details: “Stargazers is a young-adult romance set in the vibrant, ever-evolving world of Deep Space 9, where friendship, identity, and first love unfold against the backdrop of a Galaxy recovering after war. Set in a later timeline inspired by Star Trek: The Next Generation and Voyager, Recollection is a gripping mystery that follows a crew who awaken on a Federation starship without any of their memories.” (LINK IN BIO for more info!)

#PedroPascal made an appearance on ‘The Late Show with Stephen Colbert’. He arrived, asked for a little kiss, was granted said kiss, fangirled about #SigourneyWeaver, talked about #TheMandalorianAndGrogu, and went home. It was everything you could ask for and more.
