What a pleasure to work with such an engaged and enthusiastic group of BA Fine Art students @shufineart for their Pathways Project: Cutting Edge with The Company of Cutlers in Hallamshire. Thanks to dedicated tutors Jo Lee and Rachael Colley @rachaelcolleyartist for asking me to host a visit to Cutler's Hall back in March. It was wonderful to hear the students presentations just four weeks after their visit and see what they had created from sketches and photographs. Congratulations to Ellie Hayes @fineart.byellie Ellie's work Shell and Scroll was selected by myself and Rachael for display on Level 10, Owen Building, Sheffield Hallam University @sheffhallamuni . The final artwork, an engraved stainless steel knife and goldplated laser engraved plaque, the design inspired from a mirror from within the reception room @cutlers_company . #sheffield #cutlery #cutlershall #inspiration #artisticresponse

🏆 Almost trophy time, I love this claret jug! Does anyone know anything about its manufacturing origin? Not much out there on the internet.... Often so little is known about the trophies themselves in sporting circles, who designed and made this, as I couldn't get that close to check the hallmarks on Wednesday evening at The Crucible, Sheffield. Wishing Joe Perry (The Gentleman) and Ronnie O'Sullivan (The Rocket) the best of luck for the final of the World Seniors Snooker tournament, an exciting match for sure. @world_seniors_snooker #trophy #snooker #sheffield #thecrucible #worldseniorschampionship

'Cutlery Cuts' and Sheffield cutlery is known for its quality across the world. 🍽️✂️🪚 At the end of last year I received a phone call from the wonderful Curator Charlotte Dew, she asked if I would like to contribute to their forthcoming exhibition The Culture of Cutlery. I didn't need asking twice. I said, 'You can't have a cutlery show and not talk about Little Mesters the cutlery trade in Sheffield from 1300s to present day' Delighted to contribute with loans, interpretation and an essay. It has been a pleasure working with Charlotte, Gregory and Erin over email, Teams and telephone, the culmination of all of their hard work, collaboration with makers, manufacturers and great loans has ensured a stunning exhibition of cutlery, flatware and tooling. My thanks especially goes to Sheffield Assay Office @sheffieldassayoffice The Company of Cutlers in Hallamshire @davidmelloruk @chimoholdings @novasmithstudio @rachaelcolleyartist @chrisknight there is an excellent northern representation of objects and ephemera. The exhibition opened at The Goldsmiths Centre @gsmithscentre @goldsmithscentre , just two weeks ago and its on until 24th June. There is a series of lectures and visits to accompany the exhibition. 📖There is also an excellent publication to accompany the exhibition and I'm pleased to have contributed to the understanding of handmade and mass production of cutlery and flatware. The Culture of Cutlery is presented in partnership with @ccdc.uk  and @thegoldsmithscompany and set against the striking @timorous_beasties Disappearing Damask wallpaper. Visit to Hypha Studios and The Drawing Shop @hyphastudios @the.drawing.shop this evening in Hillsborough, viewed the work of the latest artists in residents Sue Hare and Sacha Gray and local community. Great to have the opportunity to talk to Johnsey about the space, the impact of art and the support from Goldsmiths Foundation @goldsmithsfoundation to enable kids to produce art and hang out in a safe space. The former Wilco store is thriving as an art and studio space in the heart of Hillsborough, a real friendly community hub, which is obviously being well utilised. #artspace #communityengagment #hillsborough #sheffield

Never disappointed with a visit to @welbeckestate The World's Mine Oyster🦪 includes such gorgeous objects from @theportlandcollection so many stunning pieces of jewellery, metalwork, furniture, portraits, landscapes and I love a clock🕒 The exhibition is beautifully and so carefully curated by @drlaurenbatt and colleagues, obviously hours of research and labour by the curatorial, technical and conservation team. Great films, so informative and really made you look more closely at the art works. The Harley Gallery @harley_foundation the exhibition Bread and Roses by @jennifervanderpools and The Stories of Coalmining were thought provoking, loved the objects and combination of images of flowers and industry, next stop @wentworthwoodhouse

📖📚 Here's wishing all followers a cracking Easter break from @ in the_library 🥚There are a few egg cups, racks and boilers, 1890 -1930 featured in the Sheffield trade catalogues of Walker & Hall, Mappin & Webb and William Hutton & Sons. Loved this one with the ❤️ shaped handle. 🍞 & 🥚My favourite object, a silver toast and egg rack, designed and made by John and Thomas Settle, assayed and hallmarked 1817, Sheffield Assay Office. All images shown in this post are part of the @sheffieldassayoffice library, archive and collection. #eggrack #eggcup #eggboiler #silver #hallmarksheffield

Celebrating 100 Years of Engineering Excellence This week, The Company of Cutlers in Hallamshire were proud to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the Joint Awards at Cutlers’ Hall, Sheffield - a century of partnership between the Company of Cutlers in Hallamshire and The Armourers & Brasiers' Company. For 100 years, these awards have supported students, apprentices, and early‑career engineers, helping them pursue projects and training that strengthen our region’s engineering future. The evening was hosted by Professor Keith Jackson CEng CDir, Master Cutler of the Company of Cutlers in Hallamshire, and Dr Geoffrey Andrews, Master of The Worshipful Company of Armourers and Brasiers. 📖 I had the opportunity to uncover and share original documents from the awards’ earliest days, helping everyone to reflect on the programme’s remarkable origins. 🏆 Congratulations to all award winners and long may the awards continue. #awards #archives #1926 #anniversary @cutlers_company

And the last stop of the day with @thesilversociety1958 Leeds @universityofleeds and @leedscitymuseum 🦉Fabulous to get access to a wonderful collection of ceremonial silver commissioned by and gifted to the university over the years and used at special occasions. It's great when collections are used and enjoyed, seen in the context they were designed and made for. Then onto the city museum to see the fakes and forgeries of the James Walker Oxley Collection, extended our knowledge from our handling session @templenewsam Loved the collectors gallery on the ground floor and to see how museums have acquired collections over the years. Huge thanks to @thesilversociety and staff @templenewsam and @lotherton for a very enjoyable and educational two days.

Day two out with @thesilversociety1958 @lotherton It's been some time since I visited this house and grounds, the interiors are warm, inviting, filled with beautiful objects. Thanks to Curator Caroline for a wonderful tour of the rooms and her recent exhibition and to Adam for facilitating the object handling session, here are a few particular favourites, and surprise surprise they are metal...... 💡Light fittings by WA Benson, I wrote about him and his work within the V&A for the Decorative Arts Society a few years back and always love to see his stunning craftsmanship. 🕯️Candlesticks by George Edmund Street, 1865, rhodium, silver and ebony. 🥣 🏺Bowl and jug by Latino Movio, 1903 - 1904, I love the detailing and the signature on the work. Admired the work for sometime and nice to see pieces in the collections at Lotherton. Elliptical leaf turning bowl in Britannia silver by @ndidiekubia And finally Arts and Crafts silverware and enamel by Ramsden, Ramsden and Carr and Ashbee #copper #silver #britannia #rhodoiumsilver #ebony

The very first item ever assayed at the Sheffield Assay Office. This sterling silver Cup & Cover was crafted by Tudor & Leader and assayed in 1773, the same year the Sheffield Assay Office was established. Recorded in the original Assay Register, this piece marks the beginning of more than 250 years of hallmarking history in Sheffield. Learn more about Hallmarking via the link in our bio.
