While Oceanic serif is an interpretation of the 18 and 19th century fat faces, with upright contrast like Bodoni, Canon or Scotch Romans, Oceanic Gothic is an exploration of the first sans serif typefaces of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries. Driven by charisma Oceanic Gothic feels like a display typeface, but it can also easily be used for text setting.

Factor A has just grown into a family of 7 weights and 56 styles, with plenty of alternates, new ligatures, Latin and Cyrillic scripts — all in a single variable font. You can now also choose between 2 alternative sets for the lowercase letters, either choosing a more neutral “f” and “t”, or going for a more Rounded/Bauhaus style altogether. And the cherry on the cake is that Factor A now has Full Trials: accents, opentype features… everything is there for a good try out.

In the late 17th century, Dutch, German, and English punchcutters were still working under the influence of the French school, especially Garamond and Jannon. Yet in the work of craftsmen such as Cristoffel van Dijck and Peter de Walpergen (Fell Types), we can already see a shift away from calligraphic models toward a sharper, more geometric approach. The Fell Types, for example, feature narrower round forms, higher contrast, and noticeably shorter ascenders and descenders. Their serifs also become flatter and more geometric, an approach that anticipates later developments in modern type.
The Dutch style moved in a more rational direction, focusing on clarity and restraint. Its Romans show stricter horizontal contrast, while its Italics adopt a sharper, more consistent axis than the fluid forms of Garamond. These ideas helped shape Caslon, which quickly became a lasting reference, arguably the period’s most effective balance of the rational and the expressive.
Statera (wip) is not a strict revival but an exploration of this transitional period, aiming to create a typeface that feels contemporary and distinctive while remaining rooted in Old Style traditions. It reflects on the point at which simplification begins to reduce elegance, and how that tension can be resolved.
