This week, Natalia Hossner from @mindthenetofficial shares tips on reducing your child's digital footprint as they browse and share online.
In her article, she shares these top tips for parents from a cyber security standpoint. Let us know below if you have any to add!
1. Think before you share (and teach your child to do the same). Anything you or they put online can be saved long after it's deleted, adding to your child's footprint which can follow them into adulthood. 👣
2. Review what's already out there. Do a quick search for your child's name, username or old profiles to see what's easily accessibly to the public. 🔎
3. Check your child's apps and privacy settings regularly. Switch off location sharing, public profiles, microphone access, ad tracking and anything that isn't necessary to the app. And if an app requests permission to access strange things, approach with caution! 🚧
4. Use strong logins everywhere. Choose a different password for every account and use a password manager to doing the remembering. For important accounts, switch on two-factor authentication. This means that your child's data has additional protections in the event of a data breach. 🔒
5. Clean up old accounts, apps and devices. It's easy to forget about things your child doesn't use anymore, but that means their personal information could be sitting vulnerable somewhere. So review and remove accounts and information on services they no longer use. 🧹

Often, the quality of screen time impacts a child's wellbeing more than the quantity, so ensure your child's on-device activities are balanced.
Help them find new apps and platforms to build their skills or inspire new interests -- from coding to learning a musical instrument to igniting a love for reading.
When choosing a new app, explore the reviews, age rating and data collection to make the best choice for your family. You can find a range of options in their device's app store.
Or if you'd like some inspiration, search 'choose apps' at InternetMatters.org.

With so much misleading and AI-generated content online, it’s becoming harder and harder for children to know what’s real.
Our research shows 8 in 10 parents are worried about misinformation, and over half of children have believed something fake online.
We're working with our partner Tesco Mobile to help families learn more about how to spot misinformation online.
