Rob Gretton with an idea, Tony Wilson with a name, Ben Kelly with a design, and Joy Division and New Order with the money. The Haçienda came into existence to stand in opposition to what already existed. By that time, the post-industrial utopia aesthetic was already present in the collective awareness, but The Haçienda helped define it. Inspired by Ivan Chtcheglov’s visionary 1953 manifesto, Formulary for a New Urbanism, and designed with a graphic language borrowed from factory interiors, the club’s priority was to create a people’s palace where the goal was not to make money, but to create a sense of journey for the club-goer. The legendary club, which opened in 1982 and peaked during the Madchester and rave years of the late 1980s and early 1990s, has been recognized as one of the ten historic places for music and literature. Design precedent for our scenography for @halte.mvt 25.

Designed focusing on directing lighting and inspired in sacred architecture to inspire a deep emotional involvement in those who enter it. Facade detail, site plan annotations + preliminary design, stencils and paint. Inspired by construction sites, we transformed a three-tier scaffolding into a playful scenography—graffitied with construction annotations using our own PVC stencils. The idea was to spread these markings across the whole site to frame the spaces and their functions, but time didn’t let us #rip. This is a hands-on opportunity for anyone curious about installation art, set design, architecture, stage production, or scenography. For our first intervention, we wanted to create an infrastructure that frames the heart of these spaces: THE DANCE FLOOR! We transformed the chinatown basement spot (iykyk) by building seven translucent screens from tarp and aluminum, designed to both divide and spotlight the dancefloor. These screens act as soft barriers, framing movement while preserving a sense of privacy. As light bouncesthrough the screens, the gestures of the near dancers are revealed and obscured—inviting you to question the unseen now made visible. Oh! And we caged the DJs. “Seen/Through” explores the unspoken language of the dancefloor: the gestures, glances, and hidden communications that define these spaces.
