Victor Van has become the first Interact artist to have work acquired by the Walker Art Center. â¨đâ¨
â¨Weâre thrilled to announce that @walkerartcenter has acquired two artist books by Victor Van â a significant milestone for Van and Interact, as we enter our thirtieth year of representing contemporary artists with disabilities. This is the first museum acquisition of original work by an Interact artist.
Exploring translations of found audio, imagery, and animations, Vanâs books are part of a larger body of work that he has continued for over a decade. In âKS95 Best Variety Songs 2013-2014,â a small hand bound book, Van transcribes the lyrics of songs he heard on the Twin Cities radio station that plays âtodayâs variety from 2k to today.â Filling hundreds of pages with infinitesimally small handwriting, Van adds drawings of cars, liquor, and snacks in the margins. In âMaria Valentina and the Mr. Piper Collection,â Van adapts a Canadian childrenâs TV show from the 1960s into a set of four books, using found paper for the covers. Both works express Vanâs larger interest in labor-intensive acts of observation and the gathering of cultural material. Â
Vanâs books will be added to the Walker Art Center Libraryâs Rosemary Furtak Collection, which houses about 2,000 artist books and is named after the former Walker librarian, who was an early champion in the field of artist books.Â
Van (b. 1993) has practiced at Interact since 2016. His work will be featured in Interactâs booth at @outsiderartfair in New York from March 19-22.Â

đŞžđ Itâs the final week to catch âSomething there in the woods...â an exhibition curated by Robert Cozzolino (@cozzomonster ) at Interact Gallery! Swing by today (Tuesday) through Thursday, May 14, during gallery open hours from noon â 4 p.m. to catch this fantastical exhibition featuring 13 Interact artists and alumni.
Cozzolino writes, â âSomething there in the woodsâŚâ is a celebration of the places in nature we might go, with our bodies or in our minds, as envisioned by thirteen artists. They re-create places of memory, depict settings that are both real and fantastic, and bring visitors close to these immersive worlds. Visitors will find landscapes that feel familiar, places dear to the artists from experience or an admired photograph, and even dream (and nightmare) environments. All of the artists entice us to travel imaginatively to these lands, feel what it might be to inhabit them. Each depicted world brings forth powerful emotions, tapping into joy and exhilaration, suspense and thrills, but ultimately conveys a sense of wondrous discovery.â
EXHIBITING ARTISTS: Katie Bretzman, Carl Clark, Bill Crane, Jesse Ferdinand (@jesse.ferdinand ), Peder Hagen, Ingrid Hansen, Kramer Hegenbarth, Ashlea Karkula, Andie Kiley, Caleb Nesbitt, Jill Reedy (@wheels4542 ), Solana R. (@sol.r.arts ), and Gary Rorby

đ đ Itâs the final week of David Wrightâs solo show, âExtra Gum London Bus,â which closes May 15! đ Come on by Interact Gallery during open hours: Tuesday through Thursday, 12 â 4 p.m.
Wright has been practicing at Interact since 2002. His voice is understated, dazzling, and clever, and his drawings are infused with a singular sense of visual logic and humor. Throughout the exhibition, observing the streets of Tokyo, Atlanta, and Sanaa, one wonders, has David been there? In conversation and in his work, Wright gives little away, providing just enough to hint at something out of frame. Itâs as if each drawing is from the b-roll of a movie, and the camera, slyly, never pans left. We linger. Cars on busy streets, buildings with grids of windows, the recognizable hum of a city that is thousands of miles away. No matter the continent or whether one has been, there is always something familiar. In Extra Gum London Bus, David Wright closes great distances.

What a dream to deliver Victor Vanâs artist books to @walkerartcenter last week. ⨠Many thanks to Head of Library + Archives Meg Black as well as Lead Educator Anna Haglin, who hosted us for a discussion of Vanâs process and practice as well as the work of some of his contemporaries in the Walkerâs Rosemary Furtak Artist Book Collection. It is a true joy to know that Vanâs singular works will be preserved and cared for here for years and generations to come. Go visit them in the library! đ

last days to see Victor Van â¨
Thought weâd share Victor in his element ââ¨in the studio, his comfort zone.
A glimpse into what these progressive studios make possible.
Heâs often surrounded by dozens of ongoing projects,â¨repurposing paper he finds around him even drawing on the backs of discarded sketches, giving them new life.
â
On view through Saturday
thereâs something here for everyone
Come spend some time with it đ¤đťâ¨

For our theater lovers, some selections from Victor Vanâs solo show, currently on view @openstudionewyorkcity . â¨â¨ NY friends, you can check out the show through April 24!
Vanâs far-reaching interests include movies, food, art history, mass produced images, current events â and of course, musicals. In Vanâs show, âGreat Expectations,â which includes 48 paintings, visions of triumph and excess sit alongside moments of longing and unease, forming a body of work that feels both overwhelming and intimate. Depending on the subject, Van has described his work as âexcruciatingâ and âexhilarating.â In these four paintings, he highlights the anniversaries of major Broadway productions, inviting us to consider the enduring cultural impact of each one.
