Attention GPS members! On Monday, November 24 at 7pm, our ongoing series of membership events continues with a listening party and conversation between Anne Waldman (@annewaldman ) and Andrew Whiteman (@intarotgate ) of Broken Social Scene to celebrate the release of their new collaborative LP, Your Devotee in Rags. This event is free for GPS members. Not a member? Sign up today! Membership starts at $5/month. (Feeling noncommittal? You can still buy a ticket.) 🎫 link in bio! In the fall of 2023, Anne Waldman hosted a two-day event called The Genius of Others and invited a wide range of artists, poets, and musicians to present their work. Now, Anne returns to 222—and hosts a listening party for Your Devotee in Rags, her new record with Andrew Whiteman, the guitarist of the Canadian rock band Broken Social Scene. Your Devotee in Rags is a sonic poetry collaboration between Anne and Andrew. Taking inspiration from musicians like Lido Pimienta and Tanya Tagaaq, the record is, in their words, “a missive to this age of patriarchal power,” and “its songs and poems are designed to specifically confront that power and hold it to account.” First, we all sit down and listen to the record together. Then Anne and Andrew have a conversation about it. This is the second of a series of membership events where we invite artists to come back. Because membership is all about coming back again and again. It’s about belonging to or becoming part of something, over time. Please join as a member, and see you at 222. Join at the Friend or Club 222 level and you’ll get an invite for a VIP gathering with Anne and Andrew before the event.

ICYMI: cultural icons, Anne Waldman (The Iovis Trilogy: Colors in the Mechanism of Concealment) and Andrew Whiteman (Broken Social Scene) have collaborated to create Your Devotee in Rags—a metamorphic sonic poetry LP released by Siren Recordings this year. Check out this amazing review from Michael Barclay, author of the bestselling That Night in Toronto Substack. “Waldman is always up front; Whiteman is always complementary, never edging her out of the spotlight. I don’t know if making Waldman “accessible” to plebes like me is Whiteman’s goal, but if so, then mission accomplished. And so I urge you to strap headphones on and take Waldman’s advice: Mount the brooms, witches!” —Michael Barclay To read the full review, click our LinkTree bio link. 🔗 More about Your Devotee in Rags: Your Devotee in Rags is a missive to this age of patriarchal power, its songs and poems are designed to specifically confront that power and hold it to account. Taking such activist inspiration from musicians like Lido Pimienta and Tanya Tagaaq, musically YDIR blends acoustic and electronic genres, waltzes, laments, and Pauls Boutique-era Beastie Boys mash-ups all with the intent of creating a new artistic headspace: sonic poetry. The cultural direction is forward, the earbuds open up the stereo field, listening to YDIR is, in a word, empowering. Flowers at Night, later seen in the morning. And the beginnings of a deep dive into the work of Anne Waldman, a peer of Alice Notley. And this Sonic Youth album which I know was not super popular at the time of its release is a true gem, and helps situate them as a sonic continuance of the New York school of poetry, of which they were fans. Which reminds me that Andrew Whiteman @intarotgate of Broken Social Scene and Apostle of Hustle did an amazing EP and album of Alice Notley’s words from her book In the Pines, set as experimental songs, which inspired me a great deal at a difficult time in my life (or anytime I hear it). And he is releasing a work called Your Devotee in Rags with Anne Waldman herself in the new year, which I can’t wait to hear. Album release show in Toronto maybe, hopefully? And to tie this back to the music, Anne Waldman has also done awesome stuff with Thurston Moore of Sonic Youtjh. Apologies, rambling now at 8:20am, winding down after an overnight shift. #experinentalphotography #multipleexposurephotography #contemporarycollage #multiexposure #collage @thurstonmoore58 @ecstaticpeacelibrary @sonicyouth_official @soniclife.archive

Hello, In 2010 I left a dead end academic job and entered the mirror world. Thankfully I found many kindred spirits lingering there, including Joshua Moses, Andrew Whiteman (@intarotgate ) and Suparna Choudhury (@suparna7c ). I am beyond delighted to encounter them all in the same room, in Montreal on Dec 14! [[[I have an essay I'm trying to get published about my mirror world adventures which, needless to say, just got even weirder. It's called “Occupy. And practice divination (or: adventures of a witch trapped by the double bind of capitalism)"; DM me if you'd like to read it.]]] And, no matter what world you live in, if you are in Montreal and interested in intersections & experiments of music, tone, wetlands, trance, poetry, and divination please join us for this happening -- oh, and dumplings! I feel strongly that communities of people coming together - in person - to access reality through poetry, music, art, and yes - divination - can and will continue to build alternate systems of support to resist the chaos that is here&coming. If you can't make it to this event, please subscribe to @the_poetry_clinic - it's an extraordinary project - with much more to come: poetryclinic.org [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][] Here's the concluding paragraph from my essay: "In this terrifying political climate, the ground is shifting. It is important that we organize mutual aid networks, and continue to support people who are struggling to survive and to be acknowledged. Sitting in a quiet room, listening to another person, tossing the dice, reading the chart, dealing the cards and collaboratively interpreting the spread are human practices that signify that we are still alive, and working together to affect the future is better than disappearing into despair." Don't worry, there will be no pontificating on Dec 14 - just listening, playing, improvising, and sharing food&space. Thanks for reading! See you there or elsewhere.... Love, K #divinationcommunity #poetryishealing #resistpatriarchaltime
