On June 22, 2025, a group friends got together to honor and pay tribute to an old friend in Big Frank Harrison. It was a live set of cover songs that culminated into a stop at Buzzbomb Studios to put some of those tracks to tape with Paul Miner. Comprised of Steve and Rich from Insted, John Coyle of Outspoken, and rounded out with two vocalists, Brad X (side A) of Doggy Style and Efrem Schulz (Side B) of Death By Stereo. Primavera de 1986, sur de California, entre patios traseros, garajes y ruido crudo, nace Insted.
Sin grandes escenarios, sin industria y lo primordial... solo energía real.
Después de unas cuantas canciones y shows improvisados, la banda empieza a construir algo más grande: una comunidad. Anaheim ya tenía su propio núcleo hardcore… y ellos estaban en el centro.
Un demo, un sello: Wishingwell Records.
Dirigido por miembros de Uniform Choice, el sello ve algo especial en Insted.
Empiezan los shows importantes, los teloneos y comienza el movimiento.
BONDS OF FRIENDSHIP (1988)
Antes de su debut, ya estaban girando con bandas grandes y creciendo en todo Orange County.
Este disco no solo los define...los posiciona dentro del hardcore straight edge.
Finales de los 80:
El hardcore straight edge está en su punto más alto. Insted entra de lleno con su fórmula:
Gira, casa, componer, shows locales, grabar, repetir. Una ética de trabajo constante. Sin pausa.
1989:
Viaje a Nueva York y shows con Vision logrando la conexión Costa Oeste - Costa Este. Luego lanzan el 7”
“We’ll Make the Difference” (Nemesis Records) y vuelven a la carretera.
Ese mismo año comparten escenarios con bandas muy importantes e historicas como Gorilla Biscuits, Bold, Slapshot, Reason to Believe. Hardcore real y sin filtros.
Logran un contrato con Epitaph Records y la banda crece: de garajes a salas de 1000 personas. Graban “What We Believe” en 1990. La banda tenia planes para grandes cosas: girar por Europa, pero la situacion actual de esos años les dijeron otra cosa: la gira es cancelada por la Guerra del Golfo.
El hardcore cambia donde se vuelve más pesado, más metal y con esto, bandas clave desaparecen como Uniform Choice, Youth of Today, Minor Threat, 7 Seconds y varias más. Insted ya no encaja en la nueva escena. Llega Julio de 1991 y se hace un último show. El lugar: Spanky’s Cafe, Riverside.
Sin drama, sin explotación, solo respeto. En este última presentación Invitan bandas nuevas y cierran el círculo.
Insted no fue solo una banda, fue una forma de hacer las cosas.
Viajaron, tocaron, construyeron vínculos reales. Hoy, su influencia sigue viva!!
