Growing up I didn’t often see Asian-Australian creatives in the media, even less if they were Japanese-Australian.
The one person I knew of was Akira Isogawa.
I always thought it was so cool that he didn’t hide his heritage but that he brought it to the forefront as a source of his inspiration. It’s definitely something I try to emulate in my work as well.
Thank you @akiraisogawa for being the pioneer that you are, for being the voice in the industry for people like me to look up to— and I was so happy I was able to tell you this in our native tongue. Getting to shoot your portrait in your studio has been a real career highlight.

Back from Tokyo after a few fast, full on days with family following my grandma’s passing. It was a beautiful farewell; quiet, heartfelt, and full of love, just as she would have wanted. We shared stories, laughed, cried, and leaned on each other.
My grandma gave me something I’ll never take for granted— a sense of home in Tokyo. That connection doesn’t leave with her. It lives on in the traditions she passed down, in the way we show up for one another, and in the next generation of family who will carry it forward.
She brought us together one last time, and even in goodbye, she reminded us who we are as a family. We’ll keep looking after each other, just like she always did.
Thank you for everything, Obaachan. I’m so glad you got to meet my bride to be and that you loved her for loving me. You are missed, you are so very loved and you’re always with us.
