#BREAKING: The High Court of Australia has accepted our application for special leave to appeal in the class action against the demolition of Victoria's public housing towers! The High Court has today agreed to hear an appeal later this year where we will argue that the state government failed to afford procedural fairness to those living in the first three towers slated for demolition under its program. Homes Victoria should have consulted with those set to lose their homes prior to the demolitions being announced, and before any decision to rebuild no public housing back on the estates. “We look forward to the opportunity to present this case to the High Court to argue that public housing residents should have been consulted with before a decision of this kind that has so deeply affected them and their communities,” says IMCL Managing Lawyer for Housing and Tenancy, Louisa Bassini.

11 May is Are You Safe at Home? Day. It’s an opportunity to ask someone in your life, ‘are you safe at home?’ In 2026 the toll of violence against women remains devastating and unacceptable. One-in-five people in Australia report having experienced physical and/or sexual violence from a partner since the age of 15. Family violence affects everyone in the community. If you're worried about a friend, colleague, family member or neighbour, start the conversation today and let them know there are legal resources available for their protection. #AreYouSafeAtHome #AskListenBelieve @safe_and_equal

According to a major investigation by the ABC’s Four Corners program, taser use by Victoria Police has grown significantly in recent years to 1209 incidents in 2025. Under police guidelines, tasers are only meant to be used as an alternative to firearms in dangerous situations when there is a risk of serious physical injury but without an effective mechanism of police oversight, there is little transparency or accountability over their use in Victoria. We need an independent Police Ombudsman in Victoria to investigate cases of police misconduct and to respond to complaints from the public about the police. #PoliceOmbudsmanNow

The Victorian government has issued approximately 3117 imprisonment warrants, most of which are for unpaid fines to road toll operator Transurban dating back for years. Many of the affected people would be unaware that they have outstanding toll debts. IMCL and other organisations are calling on the state government to purge these ‘zombie warrants’ from the system. IMCL’s lawyers regularly conduct professional legal education sessions for health professionals at inner Melbourne hospitals so they can help patients get legal help. This week, senior lawyer Lokesh Kashyap gave a presentation to more than 50 social workers at the Royal Melbourne Hospital about the Financial Assistance Scheme for victims of crime. This will equip social workers at the hospital to identify when FAS might be relevant for their patients who have been subject to violent crimes including family violence, and to draft letters of support so that patients can get access to the scheme to help them recover.

This week the managing lawyer of our tenancy practice, Louisa Bassini, spoke to the University of Melbourne Graduate Students Association about renters' rights as part of a community legal education session run by IMCL. This was particularly valuable as a high proportion of the university's graduate students are from overseas and unfamiliar with their rights as renters in Australia.

Shocking claims reported by @theageaustralia that the City of Melbourne's security guards have been instructed to use force against homeless people - this program which criminalises poverty should be suspended immediately and plans to expand it should be abandoned.

Locking up children doesn’t achieve anything. It’s harmful for everyone: kids, families and communities. The evidence is clear; any time spent behind bars increases the likelihood that the child will be trapped in a cycle of offending and incarceration – ultimately increasing future crime. And yet right now, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children are being criminalised and imprisoned at alarming rates. That’s why we, alongside 200 organisations and leaders across civil society, have signed an open letter to Prime Minister @albomp , calling on him to act. Will you add your name too? .au/open-letter-pm/

Today is World Health Day. People's health and wellbeing can be impacted by other things happening in their lives, including legal issues. IMCL lawyers Jack Price and Isabella Jones flew the flag at the Ozanam House Easter Expo on Wednesday, where a range of services chatted to residents about who they are and what they do and how they can help residents and clients. About 140 people attended the expo and Jack and Isabella had some great conversations. IMCL has had a Housing Justice Partnership with VincentCare, which manages Ozanam House for more than 20 years. Our lawyers help Ozanam’s clients to deal with legal issues of fines, housing, family violence and intervention orders. In 2024-25, we provided 389 legal services to 180 clients there. Jack and Isabella are pictured with the redoubtable Frances Pardo from Ozanam House.
