✨ The Double Grind ✨
A two-in-one nib for writers who want it all.
Created through hands-on experimentation, The Double is a unique dual grind developed by Daniel — pairing a medium architect on the front side and a medium italic on the reverse, all built on a broad nib for maximum smoothness and versatility.
🔄 Flip it for a completely different writing experience — bold, expressive strokes with the architect; crisp, precise lines with the italic.
Whether you’re journaling, lettering, or switching from block print to calligraphy on the fly, this nib has you covered.
💡 Made from a broad nib, The Double offers a generously smooth feel with slightly wider minimum line widths due to the larger tipping — a small trade-off for maximum character.
⸻
✨ The ‘M’ini Double ✨
All the character of The Double — just a little more compact.
Built from a medium nib, the M’ini Double gives you finer lines: a fine architect on the front and a fine italic on the reverse.
Perfect for those who want the flair of The Double but prefer a tighter line for everyday writing.
⸻
✨ The Reverse Double ✨
Love italics more than architects? This one’s for you.
The Reverse Double flips the original concept: a medium italic on the front and a medium architect on the reverse.
Still built from a broad nib for optimal smoothness and line variation — but catering to those who lean toward formal, upright scripts with an option for expressive flair.
⚠️ Due to the limited tipping on smaller nibs, the Reverse Double is currently only available on broad nibs — but who knows what future R&D might bring?

🎯 One nib, two grinds, infinite personality.
Whether you prefer crisp structure or sweeping strokes, Daniel’s Double grinds give you flexible options without changing pens.

✨ Sparrowhawk Grind – Duality in Flight ✨
Medium base nib
🤌🏻 The Sparrowhawk is a striking double grind developed by Daniel, inspired by the Sailor Cross Concorde and the masterful work of Monty Winnfield. Crafted from a medium nib, it offers two distinct writing experiences in one — precision on one side, expression on the other.
🖊️ On the primary side, the nib is ground to a needlepoint, delivering ultra-fine, controlled lines ideal for detail work, annotations, and compact writing. Flip the nib, and the reverse side reveals a fine–medium architect grind, producing narrow downstrokes with broader cross-strokes for expressive line variation.
But this dual nature comes with nuance:
🪶 1. Angle Awareness – The Sparrowhawk is highly sensitive to writing angle and orientation. Each side is tuned for intentional use, rewarding writers who enjoy conscious control and deliberate pen handling.
🌾 2. Contrast & Character – The transition between whisper-thin needlepoint lines and the architect’s structured stroke contrast gives this nib a dynamic personality — technical when you need it, expressive when you want it.
✍🏻 3. Precision Tuning Required – Balancing smoothness across two dramatically different grinds requires meticulous shaping and tuning. This complexity is why Sparrowhawk grinds are rarely offered as standard by manufacturers.
🫙 4. Controlled Ink Delivery – Despite its sharp profile, the Sparrowhawk maintains excellent ink control on both sides, preserving clarity and definition.
🫥 Visually, the nib’s sharp, talon-like profile evokes the beak of a bird of prey — elegant, purposeful, and unapologetically bold.
🦅 The Sparrowhawk is not a passive nib. It’s for writers who enjoy engagement, versatility, and the thrill of mastering a tool that responds to intention.

"Phone Booth (number 905 1/2)", Pedro Pietri
Rohrer & Klinger - Isatis (from @muzepens )
Midori MD
Franklin-Christoph 66 fitted with @inkcisionworks Sparrowhark (lite M)
This post is primarily about the M Sparrowhawk nib. I was gifted this by Dan Z at Inkcision as part of the "Jest Appreciation" event for my work in the #fountainpensaustralia facebook and discord communities.
I started by trying this nib out blindly, without looking at the website. I discovered that the nib has a fine on the tip, and a gentle revervse architect. Because I did not "do my homework" I also discovered that writing on a lower angle would also produce a mini stub on the front. All three positions produced good flow with no hard starting. Since Dan was creating this as a suprise for me, he went with what I would call a beginner or "lite" version of the grind to ensure I would be able to use it out of the box. This is mostly with the fine tip, which is a needlepoint in the "advanced" version of this grind. The reverse architect can also be made crisper. Both of those modifications can make a nib feel unpleasantly scratchy if the user is not used to them, hence the caution. Since Inkcision will be at the @melbournepenshow , he is going to sharpen the grind for me if I stop by!
In terms of the mini stub, as a bonus extra, I asked Dan about it before I shared here in case it gave people unrealistic expectations. Dan said:
"It actually makes sense - part of working on the front side involves a cut that may create stub-like lines. I tend to make the front side more forgiving unless I know the user is familiar with true needlepoints... But one of the unintended side effects I’ve noticed is exactly what you’ve documented!"
(If this is something you want to have one your nib, definitely discuss with Dan before/while ordering!)
Since architect is one of my favourite nibs, I've used it for the body of the poem here "wrongly" where I hold it on an angle and write to try and get a uniform line size, which helps me maintain the angle without guidelines. For "proper" writing, check the last two images!
Thank you very much Dan!

✨Needlepoint Grinds- A Masterclass in Precision✨
*EF only
🤌🏻 Needlepoint grinds are the epitome of fine-line writing — delicately ground to an ultra-fine tip (often around 0.25mm), they offer unmatched precision for those who demand control, clarity, and detail in every stroke. While standard extra fine nibs (typically 0.4mm) provide a narrow line, a well-executed needlepoint grind takes finesse even further, refining the writing experience to a surgical level of accuracy.
🖊️ This grind excels in the hands of writers, artists, and annotators who value tight line spacing, intricate cross-hatching, or micro-journaling. The result? Lines so crisp they almost feel engraved.
But this sharpness comes with nuance:
🪶1. Feather-Light Pressure – The needlepoint nib demands a gentle hand. Too much pressure and it can feel scratchy or dig into the paper — but when used with a light touch, it glides effortlessly, like a scalpel through silk.
🌾2.Tactile Feedback – Unlike broader nibs, the needlepoint offers a fine degree of feedback on textured paper — not unpleasantly so, but enough to feel the grain of your medium and remain intimately connected to the page.
✍🏻 3. Consistent Line Width – Unlike blade or stub grinds that vary with angle, the needlepoint delivers a uniform, hairline stroke regardless of orientation. This makes it ideal for detailed annotations, technical drawing, or writing in grid-lined notebooks where space is at a premium.
🫙4. Minimal Ink Spread – The ultra-fine tip lays down such a controlled line that feathering and bleed-through are virtually eliminated, even on more absorbent paper.
🫥This is a nib not meant to show off — but rather, to disappear into your hand, allowing your words, sketches, or data to take center stage.
🧑🏻⚕️When precision matters, the needlepoint delivers — whisper-thin lines, surgical accuracy, and control in every mark.

✨ Naginata / Blade Grind✨
Known as Naginata in Sailor’s lineup, blade grinds are a beautifully expressive nib shape designed to replicate the brush strokes used in traditional East Asian calligraphy. But what really sets them apart is how the line width changes depending on the writing angle — giving you a full range of stroke variation with just one nib.
🕒 At a high angle (75–90°), you’ll get a fine, delicate line, perfect for intricate lettering or writing compact characters.
🕖 As you shift to a mid angle (45–60°), the line broadens slightly, producing a more fluid, expressive stroke ideal for cursive or everyday journaling.
🕞 When held at a low angle (25–45°), the nib opens up dramatically, giving you broad, brush-like strokes that feel alive on the page — great for sketching, dramatic flourishes, or large writing.
🌈 This isn’t the predictable vertical variation you get from stubs or italics — Naginata grinds are dynamic and responsive, shaped to follow the natural movement and rhythm of your hand.
One nib, endless expression — all in the angle of your hand.
