For the last 5 years, we have been the media team engaged to capture the video content for the IRONMAN Western Australia Race in Busselton. Each year it is by far the most fun, inspiring, euphoric and emotional event we capture. The stories, the atmosphere, the physical feat, its almost indescribable. From watching elite athletes compete to their absolute limits, to people from all walks of life achieve their goal and run down that famous red carpet to the sound of “You are an Ironman!”. Each year I have been inspired, and had the urge to enter the race myself. After 5 years, that urge finally became too strong. As someone who has always been involved in sport and had a ‘goal’, it’s been a long time since I have had a goal, focus and reason for doing. So, this will be my next goal/challenge, completing a half Ironman (Ironman 70.3). It may be half, but still consists of a 1.9KM swim, 90KM bike ride and a 21KM half marathon to cap it off.
For the last 3 years, we have also been donating our time and services to the TOBY For Childhood Cancer charity. This is a charity that has become very close to our heart. While we don’t have any personal experience, working with the charity we have seen up close the effect, toll and lasting effects of the cancers and treatments on children and their families. We have witnessed the incredible work done by the charity board members, therapists, researchers and PCH staff in fighting for better outcomes for kids with cancer, and feel privileged to be a small part of the journey.
So, with all that, as an added incentive/motivator/accountable, I have decided to use the Ironman event as a fundraiser to raise money for this incredible charity. I would be immensely grateful for any and all support, donations and help reaching my target of not only completing the event, but raising a significant amount of money. September was Cancer Awareness Month 🐝
Back in August, as part of out ongoing support of the TOBY FCC charity, we had the absolute honour of being invited to PCH to meet and capture some of the people doing incredible things both in the lab and on the ward, as well as some of the beautiful families they are supporting, going through the toughest times. To know what this charity does is one thing, but to be there and witness it first hand was truly special. It was an incredibly challenging and confronting couple of days, but also two of the most fulfilling and rewarding days we’ve had to date. More to come soon.
Every week in Western Australia, a child is diagnosed with cancer. That means dozens of WA families each year are thrown into one of the toughest battles imaginable. TOBY FCC is dedicated to supporting these families and making a difference in the treatment and long term outcomes of kids with cancer.
