Here is Mrs. Dany Dean, Director of Publison, on January 19th, 2020, at the company’s headquarters in Bagnolet during the shutdown of Publison after more than 40 years of business. She seems to have lived 100 lives. Who could have imagined her incredible journey, as she overcame serious illness all throughout her existence. Alternately seamstress and model, she then joined Peter Dean's orchestra, whom she met on tour, before launching the Publison brand together in 1977. Beyond the brilliance of technical genius Philippe Petitdemange, designer of the machines, and as ingenious as the DHM89B2 was, it had to be sold in a market largely dominated by American manufacturers. I am convinced the reason why Publison has enjoyed such a lasting global success is because of Mrs Dean. Back in 1997, my passion for ORTF gear and my desire to acquire a majority of French gear, most notably the unique Publison machines, lead me to call my recording studio “Infernale Machine”. Over the years I was lucky to have regular exchanges with Peter and Dany. But in 2019, Publison was plunged into darkness following the assassination of Philippe Petitdemange. Peter Dean, who considered him his brother, died shortly after in the wake of a heart attack. A somber time which lead to an urgent question: what of the Publison heritage? Customer service had to remain in France, that was my priority. I contacted Dany and offered to manage the termination and for my talented friend Jonathan Prager to take over maintenance duties. The termination took place in early 2020. Soon after, the Bagnolet site was emptied and Publison quietly bowed out. I am relieved that Jonathan @piscineatokyo has taken up the torch. His is a solitary, time-consuming job where isolation weighs heavily. Jonathan works religiously, his meticulousness and attention to detail honors the memory of the brand. Through him, the story can now live on. Despite the tragic end of Publison, Mrs. Dean remains dignified, with boundless energy and many projects in mind. This image of her will always remain with me. I wanted to thank her warmly for validating our work in the shadows and allowing us to keep Publison alive.

I had never for a nanosecond imagined writing this, it is excessively painful to me, but I have to do it for my friend. On December 24th, Axel, my brother in arms and member of Infernale Machine since the late 90's, died suddenly of a heart attack at the age of 55. We had just spent 15 days together and were supposed to get together again on January 9th to work on restoring a few microphones. On the train, heading back from his cremation, in a state of shock, confused, I am writing the following words: We met in the late 90's after I had posted an ad for audio equipment in a newspaper called "Les Annonces Vertes". We quickly hit it off, he was passionate about MXR pedals, I was crazy for Electro-Harmonix… I told him “you absolutely have to come and see us, we're setting up a small studio in Béziers with my association”. It was bare bones, 100% DIY, and in the critical situations where I had no damn idea what I had gotten myself into, he was there to help me find a way. Growing up with no self-esteem, in a dreary town and with an absent family, I had to build myself a new one, a loving one, of which Axel became one of the major pillars. Between us, It was never a question of money, ego, misplaced pride, or capitalizing on other people’s work. Despite our precariousness, solidarity was our wealth and our escape from isolation. He was part of the great and rare constellation of scholars whose DNA is forged in sharing, without restraint or calculation. Generosity, transmission above all, sometimes to the point of forgetting his own self. He had embraced life fully and it had not spared him. Upon the time of his death, he was on his way to putting his personal life back on track. This is the image I will keep of him. Like me, he had experienced squatting, expropriation, a difficult family, personal and professional struggles. Our journeys resonated with each other. He was passionate about a whole host of things. He was pure DIY, versatility incarnate, able to redo the framework of a roof, restore a Citroën DS engine, bring back to life a Marshall JTM45 or a Neumann U47. > To be continued in the comments below

▲ For sale an early mint @neumann.berlin KM54, serial number 170, manufactured in 1955. Original nickel KK54 membrane, BV13 transformer, strong & silent Telefunken AC701k tube > K is for Klingarm = low microphonics selected tube for microphones. I was the first person to open it & I changed all the electrolytic capacitors. ⁣The Neumann KM54 is an undisputed classic, the Holy Grail of small diaphragm condenser mics, the ultimate recording tool for capturing sound of acoustic instruments. Rich and woody… great on most everything you throw at them. This mic sounds utterly butterly and up to specs, quiet, very 3D, super full and warm, beautiful open top end, comes with 2x original Neumann clips + a stereo regulated, ramped & silent PSU with excellent noise and interference rejection. Fast & secure worldwide shipping, DM me for price & up to date list ▲ ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣#vintagemicrophone #neumannKM54 #neumannKM54ac #KM54 #KM54a #KM54ac #neumann #KK54a #nickelcapsule #neumannnickelcapsule #KK54acapsule #Telefunken #TelefunkenAC701k #AC701 #AC701k #vintagemic #vintagegear #sdc #recordingstudio #recordingengineer #recordingsession #musicproducer #musicengineer #vintagerecording #analogconsole #analogrecording #myneumann #neumannKM56

▲ For sale early & pristine @neumann.berlin KM86 (Kleintuchel connector), serial numbers 2965 manufactured in 1968. Not a single scratch or dent on the body and headbasket, total time capsule item, comes with Neumann original jewel case. Sounds truly 3D and up to specs, IMHO the KM86 sounds better than the KM84, the cardioid pattern in KM86 sounds more open & airy mostly, due partially to headbasket acoustics. The microphone’s name is descriptive: KM is for Klein Mikrofon (“small microphone”). The digit 8 indicates the use of P48 phantom power. The digit 6 indicates a multipattern microphone. ⁣The KM86 is a multipattern FET condenser microphone with two K84 small-diaphragm Cardioid capsules mounted back-to-back. This mic was essentially a phantom-powered FET version of the KM66 tube mic; both models contained a switch on the mic body allows selection of Cardioid, Omnidirectional, or figure-of-8 polar patterns. ⁣ ⁣⁣ ⁣The use of two fixed-Cardioid capsules mounted back-to-back was a relatively recent innovation for Neumann. The idea was developed in the mid-1960s and first commercialized in the KM66, released in 1966.⁣ ⁣⁣ ⁣Unlike large-diaphragm multipattern mics, which create switchable polar patterns by combining the output of two sides of a dual-diaphragm capsule in a variety of ways, the KM66, KM76, and KM86 utilize twin single-sided capsules developed for the fixed-Cardioid KM84. The two capsules are mounted back-to-back, with 1cm of space between the diaphragms. Including original case with matching serial number + 1x new Kleintuchel to Neutrik NC3 MXX-B XLR cable made with Sommer Galileo 238 Plus BK.
