According to authorities, the incident happened on January 10, 2026, at Jakobs Food Mart during a routine alcohol compliance check involving undercover Gastonia officers. Officials say Derrick Manigault was involved in an argument inside the convenience store and was seen holding what appeared to be a firearm while making threats toward others in the store.
Police later stated that the weapon recovered at the scene was determined to be a replica firearm designed to resemble a real gun. Surveillance footage released by investigators shows the moments leading up to the shooting. Authorities announced that the officers involved will not face criminal charges following an investigation by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation and the Gaston County District Attorney’s Office.
