I've been matching Harry Bertoia sounds with Harry Bertoia sounding sculptures for an upcoming TBA project and a batch of videos I shot ten years ago are helping. I thought this one was particularly nice. This video was shot in the artist's barn in Barto, PA. Donald Buchla was born today, April 17, in 1937. Buchla's circuitry and sonics transcend instrument design into the realm of the fine arts. Much like Harry Bertoia, this is a designer who created instruments that can not be cloned or replicated. Anything created under the artist's hand is the real deal. This summer we'll release a double LP by the Electric Weasel Ensemble. A group which included Donald Buchla and performed the work of Allen Strange. Triple Point is available today along with Two Days In Dreamland, another trio improv session featuring Oliveros, and a new cassette from Analog Tara. Triple Point’s musical interaction was centered around an interplay between acoustics, physically-modeled acoustics (v-accordion), and electronics. Van Nort captured the sound of the other players on-the-fly, either transforming them in the moment to create blended textures or new sonic gestures or holding them for return in the near future. Oliveros changes between timbres and “bends” the intended factory sound models through her idiosyncratic use of the virtual instrument, while Braasch explores extended techniques, including long circular-breathing tones and multiphonics. This mode of interaction has resulted in situations where acoustic/electronic sources are indistinguishable without very careful listening, while other times, this becomes wildly apparent.
