Featuring: flower girl Twig, who was also the perfect party host. Friends and family who helped set up, break down, and made the days so special and fun. Special ceramic collaboration between us to make plates with meaningful icons set in an Italian piazza. Of course the desserts were homemade. Baltimore Clayworks is pleased to feature Ian Petrie @impetrie in “Winterfest 2025”. Originally from Minnesota’s St. Croix Valley, Ian earned his BFA from the University of Minnesota in 2013 and completed emerging artist residencies at the Northern Clay Center and the Worcester Center for Crafts. These formative experiences helped him develop his distinctive approach to combining handbuilt pottery with ceramic screen-printing for maximum clarity and control of imagery. He now lives and works in Philadelphia.
Ian creates highly decorated, functional pottery inspired by comics and manga, featuring detailed illustrations of his own design. Transferred onto clay through a ceramic screen-print process and sealed beneath food-safe glaze, each piece becomes both a usable object and a narrative artwork. Some works incorporate gold luster, which intentionally obscures portions of the imagery, gradually fading over time to reveal hidden details below.

Holiday by Hand Artist Feature: Ian M. Petrie
Originally from Minnesota's St. Croix Valley, Ian M. Petrie (@impetrie ) grew up surrounded by utilitarian pottery. While earning his BFA at the University of Minnesota, Ian discovered his handbuilt pottery looked especially striking dressed in comic and manga-inspired illustrations.
Through emerging artist residencies at Northern Clay Center and the Worcester Center for Crafts, Ian learned to incorporate screen-printing into his practice, gaining greater control and clarity in his graphic pottery. Ian’s illustrations are transferred to handbuilt pottery using his unique ceramic screen-print process which embeds the imagery in the clay, fully sealed beneath a food-safe glaze. Today, Ian lives and works in Philadelphia and enjoys making pottery of all shapes and sizes.
For Asher: Holiday by Hand, Ian is featuring a selection of his highly detailed illustrated tableware, mugs, cups and holiday ornaments—all of which are from his original drawings. Each piece functions as its own narrative prompt, inviting you to ponder life while also enjoying your lunch! These comic-inspired works are equally at home on the wall or on the table.
