A huge congratulations to the legend, Coach Logan Brain for being recognized by @chessintheschools as a finalist for the Lerner Award for Excellence in Chess Education.
Logan has led many players and teams to City, State and National Championships over his storied coaching career.
This past weekend he led two of his programs PS 198 and PS 77 who share the same school building to 1st and 2nd place respectively at the K-3 Championship Division at the Elementary National Championships in Baltimore.
Well done Coach!!

Congratulations to Kerah, who won an individual award for a 30th place tied finish in the K-3 u600 section! PS 184 did not have complete teams in any of their competing divisions as that required a minimum of four kids in the same section, but the kids did well overall as a collective with as high as 20th place team finish with a player short!

Thank you families for your continued support!
This last weekend we traveled to Baltimore, Maryland to participate in the Elementary National Chess Championship. A record-setting 2500+ players from across the country competed in 12 sections, from kindergarten through sixth grade.
Teams from New York took eight of the twelve possible 1st place team prizes. As always we congratulate all our friends from across the NYC public, private and charter schools who once again dominated the National competition, and we are proud to train and compete in such a vibrant community.
As a fitting cap to our 10th anniversary year, ICN programs sent almost 500 players from 35 teams supported by over 40 staff members, representing 20% of players in the eleven sections in which we competed, and we were able to secure 50% of the possible Championship team prizes (K-1, K-3, & K-5) for which we fought.
Our PS 130 Brooklyn Lions dominated, taking clear first in the toughest of the triple crown open sections, the K-5 Championship section, by two full points. And our PS 198 Bulldogs from Manhattan captured their second national title this year, this time in the toughest primary division, the K-3 Championship section.
It was also a big year for Chelsea chess! PS 33 Chelsea Prep clipped the title in the K-6 U1000 division, and the PS 11 Chelsea Chessmates took down the K-3 U1000 division by 2.5 points.
Please take a moment to look at the full individual and team results in bio link.
Last year PS 282 walked into the national championship with 6 players. Six. We were proud, we were hungry, but we knew we were just getting started.
This year we showed up differently.
Twenty-five kids. Four teams. A whole movement walking through those doors.
And then they started PLAYING.
The energy was electric from the jump. Strong start, kids locked in, parents on the edge of their seats. But nationals is a marathon and by round 7 the fatigue was real. You could see it in their little faces. Tired eyes. Heavy shoulders.
But they kept going.
That’s the part no trophy can fully capture — the moment a child decides they’re not done even when every part of them is tired. That’s the real win.
And then came the results. 👇
♟️ K-1 Championship — 8th place in the COUNTRY
A Top 10 K-1 chess team in the entire United States. PS 282. Our kids.
♟️ K-3 U600 — 6th place in the country
♟️ K-6 U1000 — 7th place in the country
3 national trophies. One weekend. One school. 🏆🏆🏆
And the most beautiful part? For so many of these kids — this was their very first nationals. First time on that stage. First taste of what they’re truly capable of.
They will carry this forever.
To the parents — I need you to hear this. You made this happen. The early mornings, the drives, the hotel rooms, the cheering from the sidelines. You were the pillar every single week and this weekend you held the whole thing up. Thank you. 🙏🏾
It is a privilege to coach these superstars. It is joy. It is the reason.
We worked all year for this moment and watching them rise under pressure on the biggest stage. I just kept thinking this is why.
PS 282, I am so proud of you. 💜
Rest up. Because the best is still coming.
Let’s go Panthers. 🚀💜💜💜
