There is something intrinsically wrong with putting such an elegant rifle in a “tactical AR case. But, it’s a functional way to get the rifle to the range so I will put up with the icky-ness. And stay tuned for a YouTube video featuring the Krag where I discuss why most firearms historians are dumbasses.

Outside of occasionally wearing leather belts, these two are my constant everyday wear ones. On the right is the Foudation belt from EDC Belt Company. I’ve had it for about 8 years and it still works as well as it did on day one. I also love the “desert sage” color. On the left is the LowPro from @wildernesstactical . I actually had the first one made for commercial sale and had the great honor of having it fitted at the Wilderness facility in front of their founder Ralph (RIP my friend). I have been wearing some Wilderness belt - Instructor, Frequent Flyer, or LowPro since 1984. In fact, I have my original one that has been updated over the years and is currently being used by my son. They build bombproof gear. You will not go wrong with either one.

If you are interested in truly cutting edge instruction in firearms training, check out this upcoming collaboration between Simon Golob and Jeff Gonzales on 8/29-30/2026 in Casa Grande, AZ. The course is not “tactical” vs “gamer”, but instead looking at how the two sides can work together and produce a superior student performance. I will be there at the class, so come and watch me be the worst performer and join in on the mirth!

The Evolution Security podcast is back, and I was their first guest. We spent a ton of time talking about entangled fights in the real world and how they are far more common than a lot of people want you to believe, and I cite actual empirical data and logic in doing so. I thought it was a pretty fun and freewheeling chat. Check out out if you get the chance.

One of my favorite books to read-read. TR was such a great writer and could be so evocative with emotions and settings. This is arguably his masterpiece. A great story, a great historical artifact, and great lessons in shooting, hunting, getting into nature, and life in general.

I’ve started adding more content on my YouTube channel. Nothing monetized, just good information that I think can be pretty damn useful. Check it out and subscribe if you have not since I will be adding more and more.

After a phone call with one of my shooting mentors, I pulled out these two books. I devoured both of them when I was in high school circa 1979-1980. At the time, there was so little access to deep information about the defensive use of firearms, and these were gold back then. I have not read either of them in probably 35+ years. Going back to them is really amazing. The bulk of the information, especially the underlying concepts and principles are still insightful and useable today. I love revisiting books. Good ones always provide new insights or great reminders.

Not my favorite day to get through. This would have been my Dad’s 83rd birthday. He has been gone almost 26 years, and I think of him almost every day. The past five years have been worse because of my Mom being gone as well. It does not matter how old you are, being an orphan sucks. I often think of how much he would love his great-grandchildren. He would go bankrupt spoiling them. Ailey especially would have him wrapped round her fingers. I try desperately to measure up to him, and I constantly fall short. But I do try Dad. Thank you for being such a high bar to measure myself against. Thank you for being a role model that helps me navigate a tough world. I hope some day I leave half the mark you did.
