Here is my story. I started Imen Chow Makeup 5 years ago after working in retail makeup and completing my qualifications.
My passion for beauty started during high school summer holidays whilst browsing YouTube. I made my mum take me Target and buy eyeliner for the first time. I wrote pages and pages of notes on how to apply eyeshadow.
With gusto, I fell in love with makeup artistry. Aside from luxurious products, it was the art of applying colour, as well as creating light and shadow on someone's face.
Building my portfolio wasn't easy and on most days, I wake up and felt defeated with zero enquiries in my inbox. I started comparing myself to others, and well, you know what that does to our self esteem.
I was the master at being self critical, despite the encouragement from my family and friends. Reflecting on this now, I'm so thankful for them believing in me.
Slowly over the years, I've learnt that my style isn't for everyone and that's okay. There will always be someone better than me or charge less than me, and that's okay. Throw in lots of practice, upskilling and sparks of confidence, today I feel more secure in my skill and business than ever.
I've had people tell me I will never breakeven doing makeup, that an Asian makeup artist doesn't have a market in Australia (not true). These photos represent my success overcoming the above.
I hope by sharing my journey here, it will encourage you to chase your passions and dreams, wildly and freely.
Love, Imen
Day in my life as a freelance Perth makeup artist, weekday wedding edition✨
I was also obsessed with Twilight in high school so having this and Gilmore Girls playing in the morning was 😚🫶🏼
What's playing in my studio recently✨
Nothing too loud - my sensory levels cannot😇 having some of my favorites playing gets me to my flow state during makeups☁️
Lately it's been:
• lights on - Maggie Rogers
• rein me in - Olivia Dean & Sam Fender
• hows it gotta be - Nector Woode
• birds of a feather - Billie Ellish
• everything hallelujah - Justin Bieber
• look after you - The Fray
• forever lover - Chinese American Dragon
A mix of old school, classic & songs I can't get out of my head!
Send me your favourites 🫶🏼
As a makeup artist, I spend so much time watching people's energy change in front of me. The big smiles after they see themselves in the mirror.
I forget sometimes I need that too.
Getting my makeup done reminded me it's never just about the makeup - it's the shift that follows and coming back to yourself during that moment.
Thanks @thi_hmua for the glam 🫶🏼

What you see online isn't always what translate in real life.
So many pictures on Pinterest or Google is heavily edited, filtered - it can make it hard to understand how a look will actually look like on real skin.
When you are choosing a look, try starting with real artist portfolio (all pics here are untouched, shot on an iPhone) and searching by your own features reallyyy helps in describing what you want.
Save this for when you are choosing your bridal look 🫶🏼
