Guest Bartender Deborah Toyota is the collaborative project of Julia Shapiro (@im____constipated ) and @samurkhouja , whose distinct musical worlds meet in ‘Music for Babies’, an album built on tenderness, experimentation, and restraint.
Inspired by a shared curiosity about what music might sound like at the very beginning of listening, the record imagines itself as a baby’s first encounter with sound. It moves gently between lullaby, ambient composition, and quiet experiment, treating infancy not as a novelty but as a space worthy of care, play, and attention.
Shapiro, known for her work with indie rock band Chastity Belt, brings a gift for understatement and melodic clarity, while Khouja’s projects, including Conscious Summary and production work with artists such as Cate Le Bon, lean toward texture and left-field pop architecture. Together, they make something quieter, slower, and deliberately unguarded: a record meant not to impress, but to accompany.

WE ARE SO BACK!
Announcing a dreamy split 7” from @chazzybelt and @holywavetx ! Out today, @chazzybelt offering “That Guy,” rings with the band’s signature laid-back-yet-precise style. Jangly, intricate guitar work plays off easy rhythms; an upbeat tranquility buoys wistful riffs. The lyrics are honest and introspective as Julia Shapiro admits to being “that kind of guy”—the type who just wants to feel alive, despite the pull of screen time, and the tendency to hold onto something until the life has been sucked out of it “Maybe quitting is okay, but I don’t like giving things away,” she sings, backed by warm vocal harmonies. “I’d rather hold on for too long, until all the feeling’s gone.”
Limited to 1,000 copies, the pressing will include 400 yellow vinyl, 300 red vinyl, and 300 green vinyl. The 7” is out February 7, 2025, but you can pre-order now through the link in our bio.
