🇺🇾 Last week, the Director-General of the ILO, Gilbert F. Houngbo, undertook an official mission to Uruguay, where he highlighted the country’s strong tradition of social dialogue ahead of the upcoming International Labour Conference. During his visit, Houngbo met with representatives of the government, employers and workers, underscoring the importance of tripartism in building consensus and advancing productive employment and decent work. “Social dialogue in Uruguay stands out for the quality of its exchanges, the mutual respect among the parties, and the autonomy of its actors. It is a relevant international example of how tripartism contributes to more just and inclusive societies,” the Director-General said. The mission reaffirmed Uruguay’s role as a strategic partner of the ILO in the region and helped strengthen cooperation in key areas for the promotion of decent work. 📸 Here are some moments from the mission. @oit_americas

Across countries, cognitive and socio-emotional skills are strongly demanded, while manual skills also remain essential in many jobs. The evidence points to one clear shift: better outcomes are increasingly linked to skill combinations, not isolated strengths.

There is no single skill that unlocks a better job. What matters more is how skills work together. Across labour markets, employers increasingly look for rounded skill bundles, not isolated strengths — combinations that bring together cognitive, socio-emotional, manual and technical skills in different ways. That is the real shift: not one “skill of the future,” but stronger combinations of skills.

Behind this number are workers, families and communities. The ILO estimates that psychosocial risk factors are responsible for more than 840,000 deaths annually due to associated cardiovascular diseases and mental disorders. Safer and healthier work must include prevention of psychosocial risks.

Some harmful realities at work are still too often normalized. But long working hours, job insecurity, and pshychological harassment are serious psychosocial risks. New ILO estimates show that psychosocial risks at work are responsible for more than 840,000 deaths each year, nearly 45 million disability-adjusted life years lost, and 1.37% of global GDP lost annually. This is further corroborated by the fact that 35% of workers globally work more than 48 hours a week, 23% have experienced violence or harassment in their working life, and 18% have experienced psychological violence. #SafeDay

How’s work? 🤔 It sounds like a simple question, but the answer can reveal a great deal about health, well-being and how work is organized. This slider draws on key findings from the ILO’s new report on the psychosocial working environment: the scale of the risks, why they matter, and why prevention needs to focus on how work is designed, organized and managed. Where do you see the biggest opportunity to improve the psychosocial working environment at work? #SafeDay

Ahead of #EarthDay, meet Shakti, a farmer in Bangladesh making the most of two very different seasons. In the dry months, he grows rice. When the monsoon comes, he turns to floating rafts to grow vegetables, drawing on traditional knowledge and sustainable practices. By adapting with nature, Shakti is helping support his family, strengthen his community, and care for local ecosystems in Bangladesh 🇧🇩. 🗨️ What does a Just Transition look like in your country or community?
