Back home from two weeks in Ireland, filming for Flowering Dusk: Irish Magic in the New World — conceived as a surprise love letter, now a requiem for love lost to stormy seas. The story of anti-colonial revolutionary and mystic poet, Ella Young, who led the Celtic Revival and followed the spirits of wild places from Tír-nan-Óge and Inis Mór to the California redwoods and the shifting golden dunes of the Central Coast.
She ran guns for freedom fighters in her twenties, held court with fairies and heard the Ceol Sidhe. She moved to California in 1925. Ansel Adams loved her. Edward Weston photographed her. She was the first woman to hold an endowed lectureship in Berkeley's English department.
She inspired the earliest intentional communities from Druid Heights in Marin to The Temple of the People in Halcyon; her last years spent writing poetry and lounging in a hammock, naming the clouds over Oceano.
