A system not just of furniture, but of possibility meet the BYGGA series. Piece by piece, shelf by shelf, you were invited to plan, arrange, and compose your own functional wall exactly as you wanted it. Behind the simplicity lay careful thinking led by Gillis Lundgren, ensuring that what reached the home felt effortless. Rails, brackets, and shelves fitting together with a precision that made creation intuitive rather than complex. A gentle kind of engineering where every detail served both form and function. BYGGA was never just assembled it was composed.

Welcome to the opening of Real Play - an exhibition about why play matters! On 12 May at 12:00, we invite you to a conversation where curiosity leads the way. Why do we play and why does it matter more than we think? Meet Professor of Happiness Micael Dahlén, IKEA designer Marta Krupińska and Real Play exhibition curator Anna Sandberg Falk. Together, they’ll share their perspectives, research, and real-life reflections on how play shapes the way we think, work and live. 🎈

Let us re-introduce EPOK and BJÖRKA, as presented in the IKEA catalogue 1969: Of course, the greatest comfort comes from armchairs around the dining table — offering better relaxation and a more pleasant seating position. The EPOK armchair in steam-bent beech is also remarkably good value and pairs beautifully with the BJÖRKA table. A large, sturdy dining table with a durable, surface-treated top. The thick surface layer is made from laminated birch staves — both beautiful and built to last.

In the 1985 catalogue, it can be read that SEMI is a lamp that was previously sold in exclusive shops at a high price. Now, however, it will be found at IKEA for a much lower price. After all, rents are higher in the city-centre, staffing levels greater and there are usually additional intermediaries — all of which presumably drive up the final cost.

Launched in 1991, PROLOG by designer Tord Björklund came both as a floor lamp and a table lamp. With a bold bentwood arc, clean metal stem and adjustable shade, it points the light exactly where you need it. What do you think of PROLOG? 🥰

In 1958, IKEA opened a new large showroom in the small town of Älmhult. Visitors travelled from far and wide and many needed to stay overnight. When IKEA repeatedly had to recommend hotels and rooms Ingvar Kamprad spotted a business opportunity. Read more about how today’s IKEA Hotell came to life via link in bio!
