Also known as Maglera Doe Boy.
Lonwabo is now Bodigelo by clan name.
His mother is my older sister who I handed to the Bodigelo clan according to Ntu wedding customs.
Her first born son.
This image was taken in the township of Kanana where I was raised.
Kanana is the name of the city of Canaan in the bible.
The land of Milk and Honey.
But on the contrary.
In this township I grew up to knife culture.
Organised crime by my friends who were street kids.
Walks to town after catching pigeons near the river.
Conversations with old miners about the colonial era and near misses with glue huffing hobos who taught us the old tsotsi taal.
A mixture of fun memories and traumas.
Lonwabo is me when I was his age.
Even his blank stare into the camera.
A face the township teaches little boys very quick.
A face I don’t want him to have for the rest of his life like me.

I blurred some faces in this image because they do not come from Gang culture and this post is about that.

These are not their real names.
These are their Stilalas.
Names given from when they became active members.
They are HL.
A collective that I have only seen mentioned on a documentary with the brothers Rashaad and Rashied Staggie in Capetown shown to me by my good friend @rolo_rozay
My late best friend Slash was the leader of this group in the township I was raised in.
I was with them so much I was called a member.
They still do in some parts of the township.
This video speaks about what gang culture does to the kids in the township but it was very much about them.
I saw the township take their innocence and then they became these people.
This video is not to say it’s cool.
It’s to say this is still happening.

Icarus.
The boy who flew too close to the sun.
In Greek mythology, the son of Daedalus, who escaped from Crete using wings made by his father but was killed when he flew too near the sun and the wax attaching his wings melted so that he fell into the sea, and was drowned. Icarus is used allusively to denote someone who is over-ambitious in their aspirations.
Are we as a species prone to dreaming too far?
Aiming to high?
Or is this the very existence of mankind?
To want to be greater than we can imagine.
