Weeks posts
I’ve been so fortunate to be surrounded by friends that I consider family during the rollercoaster that has been these past weeks, from meeting my Titi Vicky after 17 years, to the loss of my abuelita earlier that same day, The last slide is probably one of the most important photographs to me ever, it was the first time that my family including my abuelita heard me play, Te amo X100PRE mí angelita en el cielo ✨✨✨

Frank Espada wasn’t just a photographer. He was a documentarian of struggle, dignity, and everyday Puerto Rican life in the United States. Walking through this exhibition at the National Museum for Puerto Rican Arts and Culture, I was reminded that photography can be more than art. It can be evidence. It can be resistance. It can be memory. Espada photographed migrant workers, families, activists, neighborhoods, and moments that mainstream America often ignored. His work showed Puerto Ricans not as stereotypes, but as people living full, complicated, and beautiful lives. What struck me most was how intentional his lens felt. These weren’t accidental moments. They were acts of preservation. Acts of visibility. As a public historian, seeing his work in person felt like standing inside an archive of our collective story. And it raises a bigger question. How many histories would disappear if people like Frank Espada hadn’t picked up a camera? #history #learnontiktok #tiktoklearningcampaign #blackhistorymonth #Blackhistory

Slavery was officially abolished in Puerto Rico on March 22, 1873, by the Spanish National Assembly, freeing over 29,000 enslaved people. However, this was a conditional emancipation requiring formerly enslaved individuals to work for their former masters for three additional years, with full, unrestricted abolition occurring in 1876. #blackhistory #education #history #culture

Visiting the National Puerto Rican Museum in Chicago is such a powerful experience. Walking through the exhibits and taking the tour reminded me that our history is living, breathing, and still unfolding. From art to activism, every room tells a story of resilience, creativity, and orgullo Boricua. If you haven’t gone yet, make the time. Bring your family. Bring your students. Bring your friends. Learn the stories, ask questions, and support a space that honors our culture with intention and care. We need places like this — and they need us too.
