🪞 broadway manor is an 1897 queen anne victorian designed by moses j. lyon on one of pacific heights’ most prominent blocks. it has been in the family of architect herbert p. mclaughlin for over 50 years and is for sale for the first time since 1969. northern california’s most celebrated designers just transformed it as the 2026 sf decorator showcase (@sfshowcase ), restoring the original millwork, period staircase, and stained glass windows while bringing the rest of the house completely into the present. the bones were always there. now the interiors finally match.

walter hall was the master craftsman behind fallingwater, frank lloyd wright’s most celebrated work. in 1935, while that legacy was still being made, he built something for himself. lynn hall sits carved into a pennsylvania mountainside above the allegheny river valley, on nearly ten acres of dark sky country, and it carries the same tapestry stonework and integrated design philosophy as the house that made him famous. the original cabinetry and furniture are still there, built on the usonian principle that architecture and everything inside it should read as one continuous idea.

🦌 the wilkinson house sits in the tree canopy on a wooded pacific northwest site. @robertoshatz.architect designed it for a resident who loves birds and music, and he built both obsessions directly into the architecture. walls of glass let light pour through and keep the surrounding bird life visible and audible from almost every room. built in furnishings, open plan, and a space that flows between inside and outside. most pacific northwest homes sit peacefully among the trees. this one becomes part of them.

🧚 joseph keen broke ground on villa keen in irvington in 1929 and built exactly what the name suggests. stained glass gates, turret bedrooms, a chesney fireplace, a schonbek crystal chandelier, and a beech tree out front with native american carvings from the 1700s. the associated press president typed from the oak library. the carol burnett show producer moved in during the 1960s. shirley jones, jack cassidy, and shaun cassidy all called it home. the grand piano is still in the living room. the chandelier never left. thirty minutes from manhattan and waiting for whoever is next. maybe it’s you.

🫒 peridot sits on the 38th floor of the henderson, the new sculptural tower by zaha hadid architects in hong kong’s financial district. @studiopaoloferrari designed the interiors around a single colour they call olivine, a green with a warm golden cast that shifts as the city turns on at night. it covers the walls, curves into the ceiling, runs through the carpet, and reappears in the green korean marble of the restrooms. love it or hate it, you can’t deny it’s exquisite.

a house as a conversation starter 💛 the floating staircase is the first thing that gets you, a sculptural spiral that appears to hover in the center of the home with no visible support. then there is the pool, concave and curved in a way that plays tricks on your eyes and makes you look twice. the landscaping was done by @alexhanazaki , one of brazil’s most respected landscape architects, who wove the surrounding greenery into the architecture so beautifully that the house and the garden feel like one continuous idea. every corner of this place offers something unexpected. that was the whole point.

samuel and portia bell hume were a uc berkeley professor and a pioneering psychiatrist who took a trip to france, fell in love with a 13th century monastery, and decided to replicate it back home in the berkeley hills. the result is the hume cloister: a gothic revival estate with arched colonnades, 25 foot ceilings, stone walls, and a cloister courtyard with a wishing well imported directly from france. it has been a berkeley landmark since 1985. it is one of the most remarkable properties in california and the story behind it is just as good as the house itself.

carapace house in ahmedabad was designed for a family who asked for something different. 💡 they got two curved concrete shells sitting beside a reflecting pool and a generous garden, each tube with its own purpose: the larger one for living, dining and relaxing, the smaller one for sleeping. the beds, the benches, the side tables, all concrete. you arrive through a winding path of mature indigenous planting that keeps the cars out of sight and reveals the house slowly.the location just makes it all the more extraordinary.
