The late, great Budi Darma’s most famous novel, Olenka, is finally making its English-language debut this July via Penguin Classics, translated by Tiffany Tsao!
Set in Bloomington, Indiana—where Budi Darma completed his doctoral degree—Olenka follows Fanton Drummond’s obsessive encounters with the mysterious Olenka Danton after spotting her in an elevator. Inspired by a real-life chance encounter during his grad school days, Budi Darma poured the story into his typewriter in a sleepless, three-week frenzy. The novel even features collage-like clippings from the Indiana Daily Student!
As we celebrate what would have been his 89th birthday today, we can’t think of a better tribute than his masterpiece finally finding new readers across the globe.

Hong Kong author Lau Yee-Wa has officially been named the winner of the 2025 Chommanard International Women’s Literary Award for her novel, Tongueless.
A congratulations also to Leila S. Chudori and Isna Marifa for standing on that shortlist among Asia's best writers! Making it to the final stages of this prize is a huge milestone.
At the recent author gathering, both writers talked about a shared, vital mission behind their work: refusing to let history be erased. Through The Sea Speaks His Name, Leila sheds light on the forced disappearances of the New Order era. Meanwhile, Isna’s Mountains More Ancient uncovers a piece of history largely missing from our textbooks—the 18th-century Javanese exiles who fought colonialism in South Africa.
The Chommanard International Women's Literary Award is a prestigious award, celebrating outstanding English-language fiction from female authors in ASEAN, China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. It recognizes literary excellence, social impact, and cultural relevance, with the award night held in Bangkok on April 3, 2026.

Our editorial board is currently reviewing and curating the manuscripts that have come in for the first issue. It’s an exciting process. The range of voices and perspectives reminds us why building this platform matters. As a new literary journal, still shaping our editorial direction and ideals, we hope this curation process unfolds carefully with the submissions already received.
At the same time, we know some writers may not have had the chance to submit before the initial deadline. So we’ve decided to keep the submission window open a little longer—until the end of March.
Thank you to everyone who has already submitted their work. And for those who haven’t yet, there’s still time.
