My Umi says Shine your light on the world, but my light is only a reflection of her light that shines through me.
I’m most grateful for her accountability, transparency, communication, and judgment-free space that I borrow with pride. I learned by example that a (wo)man who’s accountable to no one is a danger to themselves.
Being able to learn from her missteps is helping me break generational curses. Her trust and confidence expressed through loyalty and communication inform my interactions.
The willingness to have tough conversations, communicate through difficulties, tolerate ideas that I don’t agree with, set boundaries, and reroute around obstacles are tools she either provided me with or gave me the insight to seek on my own.
She raised me not to need her, but I’m elated to have her as a resource that I use sparingly. I pour everything I have into her every chance I get because she’s provided me with so much!
