🔥 Even Peter Jackson himself admits that Denethor’s final run was impossible — but iconic. 🔥
This moment is legendary not just for the image of Denethor engulfed in flames — but for how cleverly it was created.
📽️ Here’s the wild bit most people don’t know: the funeral pyre itself wasn’t actually lit during key shots because Shadowfax🐴 refused to go near real flames. Instead, Peter Jackson’s team used a practical camera trick — reflecting real fire off a sheet of glass placed in front of the lens so it looked like the pyre was blazing on screen. It’s such an old-school filmmaking solution and incredibly effective.
🔥 Then comes the shot — Denethor sprinting through Minas Tirith fully ablaze. This is where the stunt work becomes extraordinary. Full-body burns like this are among the most technically demanding stunts in cinema: fire-retardant layers, protective gels, exact timing marks, and a safety crew just out of frame ready to extinguish the flames the second the take ends - coordinated by the legendary stunt coordinator George Marshall Ruge.
✨ Best bit of trivia: even Peter Jackson admitted the geography of the scene is pure poetic licence. Denethor runs an almost impossible distance from the Tombs all the way to the city’s prow before leaping — far further than the layout actually allows — because Jackson had always envisioned that unforgettable silhouette of a burning figure plunging from Minas Tirith.
