Lipika: The film carries my past experiences, but it also carries a very specific moment in my life. When I was editing it, I was in intense physical pain and in a state of emotional vulnerability. There was a sense of creative distress and restlessness as well, and that inevitably shaped the tone of the film. The tone is aligned to reality- my real experiences. The mood feels inward, internal, and quiet and sometimes intense. That’s very close to who I am. A large part of my inner world is reflective, and the film becomes a mirror of that state. At the same time, I like to believe in kindness, in love, and in the quiet magic of existing on this earth and of looking at the universe and feeling part of it. All of that lives in the film as well. Lipika: Again, no fixed plan, and as I call it an essay film within documentary parameters, I wanted to stay with what was actually there. All the sound, apart from the music, is recorded on location with the images. That was important to me. The music comes from my earlier film The Waterfall (Fiction Short), from original pieces composed during the making of the film. I didn’t really manipulate the sound, just basic levelling. The cuts, the silences, the edits are where my response comes in. Otherwise, I was interested in letting the film stay close to its own material, to the place, and to the moment itself. Lipika: The female narrator is me, though not as a voice over narrator. I exist as a spirit, as energy, as someone in search. What I speak is a consciousness shaped over time. The film is an amalgamation of residual footage from many works I have made. Hence it speaks about many things. Those films had already been working on me long before I began this one. They shaped my way of seeing, and in turn continued to shape me. What emerges here is a reflection of a documentary filmmaker, perhaps, but also of a person who has lived through these accumulations of experience. In that sense, the film became a form of rescue. The act of letter-writing, the process itself, carried me through a particularly difficult and vulnerable period in my life. While the letter speaks of night and fear, it also holds space for beauty, for magical moments, for nature, for waterfalls of intensity that feel sometimes excessive. The dark and the luminous side of the world. To experience them, to respond to them, to live with and through them while we are alive - this feels like a profound privilege and sometimes unreal. Lipika: There was no planned use of color. In fact, there was no planning as such. I sat down to edit and finished it in one go in 15- 20 days. The film emerged out of urgency. During a period of fear and physical unwellness, I felt an intense need to hold on to my experience, images, sound, stories, and other realities as a filmmaker, as a person. When I began writing the letter or say, editing the film, the archived images had already started assembling themselves. They formed a narrative almost independently of me, as if something internal structure had been waiting for me through which it could speak. That process eventually gave birth to the complete narration. The use of split screens has been present since my first essay. In the third, the screen is divided into three parts. This is not merely a formal choice; it is tied to physical memory. Writing a letter by hand and folding the paper, dividing it, enclosing thought within measured spaces. Even the inland letters we once used carried this sense of segmentation, of intimacy shaped by structure. The screen, for me, becomes an extension of that. About color - I am extremely sensitive to it. Certain colors become unbearable at times, let's say, red, for instance and I feel compelled to remove or alter their presence in my environment. At other moments, I search for a very specific red or yellow: in rangoli, in fabric, in light,in flowers. It calms me down. In this film, color is simply a reflection, nothing more constructed than that. The creative impulse came from responding honestly to what I felt at that time.
