Sharing the work of CP student Myrto Tzima today. Myrto Tzima is a visual artist and film art director from Athens, Greece. Her mediums include photography, writing, filming and working with archives. If there is a constant that permeates her work in photography, but also in other art forms, that would be her interest in how the memory of experience affects the perpetual “now”.

Sharing the work of CP student Mallory Vargas today. Mallory’s work explores family and identity through the lens of her own lived experience. Rooted in memory, emotion, and personal history, her practice reflects on relationships, loss, and change, translating these complex feelings into physical images. By altering and breaking down family imagery, she examines how personal dynamics shape who we become, creating work that feels deeply personal yet widely relatable. “Hello! I’m Mallory and I’m from Texas, born and raised, my work explores family and identity through the lens of my own experience growing up and its lasting emotional impact. I’m interested in translating the emotions tied to those relationships, loss, and change into physical images. This work is a way for me to process and share a story that’s difficult but familiar to many as well as understanding myself. By altering and breaking down family imagery, I challenge and reflect on how my personal family dynamics have shaped and impacted my life and myself” — Mallory Vargas

Sharing the work of CP student Virginia Garcia Ruiz’s work today. Virginia’s work is a love letter addressed to the natural world; especially birds, printmaking, and science. Her photography practice has been sustained over the past couple of years by her discovery of alternative processes and film photography. “There is a certain kind of electrifying magic that arises when I create without the immediate reward of seeing. For me, taking the picture is merely the beginning of the adventure. Iteration, chemistry, and the subconscious mind do the rest.” - Virginia Garcia Ruiz

Join us in the ICP library on Tuesday, December 9, at 6:30 PM EST at the ICP library. This Living Room edition at ICP welcomes James Estrin @jamesestrin , a photographer, editor, and educator whose connection to this institution goes back to its earliest years. As a student in the first generation of the ICP school (Advanced Studies ‘78–‘80), James was shaped by Cornell Capa’s vision of “concerned photography”—a belief that images can carry both moral weight and social responsibility. Throughout his decades-long career at the New York Times and beyond, he has carried that ethos forward, building platforms for emerging voices while documenting the world with empathy and rigor. This evening is not just a conversation about a remarkable career; it is a return to roots, a chance to reflect on the legacy of ICP’s founding ideals and how they continue to animate the work James has championed ever since. Bios: James Estrin is a senior staff photographer and writer for the New York Times. He was also a founder and co-editor of Lens, the Times’s photography blog. James started at the Times in 1992 and was part of a Pulitzer Prize winning team in 2001. He was the co-executive producer of the documentary film "Underfire: The Untold Story of Pfc. Tony Vaccaro" which appeared on HBO in November 2016. He is also an adjunct professor at the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at the City University of New York. Sunny New Jersey turned into a real adventure for us. Together with @aimeewalleston we dove into the ICP archives and quite literally touched history, from Robert Capa’s camera to rare hand-printed photographs that still hold time inside them. Shot on film, developed and scanned at @icp

Today we visited Mana Contemporary from ICP to explore the ICP Archives—where history quietly lives in boxes, drawers, and silver grains. Holding space with the original works of legendary photographers was an unforgettable experience. There’s something powerful about seeing their prints in person. Truly inspiring.
