As international media outlets quickly picked up the story, it was early confirmation that the months of secret work had paid off.
In Latin America, cancer patients face two enemies: the disease and a system designed to protect profits over lives.
From undisclosed conflicts of interest in Peru’s drug approval process, to judges in Brazil and Guatemala — the story is the same. Merck’s pricing strategies, patent fortress and industry influence are locking out patients across the region from accessing Keytruda, the world’s best-selling drug.
In Argentina, where Keytruda is not patent-protected, a local competitor entered the market and forced Merck to cut prices by 50%.

In the year since publishing the #ChinaTargets exposé, a slew of fake ICIJ reporters approached journalists, Taiwanese officials, and human rights advocates seeking sensitive data. With the help of cybersecurity analysts at Toronto University’s @thecitizenlab , we investigated.
ICIJ found that the impersonation attempts were part of a sophisticated campaign targeting the groups at the center of the 2025 investigation, as well as those who report on them.

Detrás de ese precio, hay un negocio global. Su fabricante, Merck Sharp & Dohme, lo sostiene combinando patentes que retrasan la competencia, pagos a médicos que influyen en su prescripción, presión para acelerar y ampliar sus aprobaciones y financiamiento a organizaciones de pacientes que influyen en el debate sobre su acceso.
Así, los sistemas de salud quedan bajo presión y las familias se endeudan o enfrentan disputas con sus seguros para cubrirlo, incluso cuando no guarda proporción con los costos de investigación y desarrollo. Un patrón que se repite en la industria farmacéutica.

❗Ο Έλληνας πρόεδρος του Eurogroup στο σπίτι της πρέσβειρας του Τραμπ.
🔸 Δεν απαντά ο υπουργός Οικονομικών για την παραθεσμική παρουσία του στην οικία Γκιλφόιλ, σε άτυπη συνάντηση όπου ασκήθηκαν πιέσεις από τις ΗΠΑ για αυξήσεις στα φάρμακα.
🔸 Στις 2.4.2026 ο κ. Πιερρακάκης συμμετείχε σε σύσκεψη στην οικία της πρέσβειρας Γκιλφόιλ για τη μείωση του clawback, που επιβάλλει στις εταιρείες την επιστροφή εκατομμυρίων ευρώ στο Δημόσιο όταν εκτροχιάζεται η φαρμακευτική δαπάνη. Παρόντες ήταν εκπρόσωποι έξι φαρμακευτικών των ΗΠΑ και ο υπουργός Υγείας Άδωνις Γεωργιάδης.
🔸 Η χρονική συγκυρία είναι κομβική. Στις 19.12.2025 ο πρόεδρος Τραμπ συμφώνησε με εννέα αμερικανικές φαρμακοβιομηχανίες για μείωση των τιμών των φαρμάκων στις ΗΠΑ. Όμως, ο Τραμπ ασκεί τώρα πιέσεις ώστε να αντισταθμίσει τα χαμένα κέρδη των πολυεθνικών με αντίστοιχη αύξηση των τιμών σε Ελλάδα και Ευρώπη.
🔸 Υπό τη συγκυρία των πιέσεων Τραμπ η παρουσία του Έλληνα προέδρου του Eurogroup στην κατοικία της κ. Γκιλφόιλ φαντάζει αντιθεσμική.
🔹 Τι συζητήθηκε στη συνάντηση;
🔹 Τι θέση πήρε ο κ. Πιερρακάκης;
🔹 Ενημέρωσε δημόσια για τα αποτελέσματα της συνάντησης;
🔹 Γνώριζαν οι Ευρωπαίοι ομόλογοί του την παρουσία του εκεί;
❗Ο κ. Πιερρακάκης οφείλει να απαντήσει.
🔸 Ρωτήσαμε τον κ. Πιερρακάκη: «Δεδομένων των πιέσεων της κυβέρνησης Τραμπ προς ολόκληρη την Ευρώπη για αύξηση της τιμής των φαρμάκων, ανησυχείτε για το μήνυμα που δίνει στην ΕΕ η παρουσία του επικεφαλής του Eurogroup σε αυτή τη σύσκεψη;». Ο πρόεδρος του Eurogroup δεν μας απάντησε.

In the United States, it’s nearly impossible to know how many of the more than 220 million people with private health insurance are denied coverage for specific treatments.
But when patients are denied coverage, their options are limited. If appeals to the insurer fail, filing a complaint with the state insurance regulator may be the last recourse.
Tiffany Ferguson knows this system all too well.
Keytruda has been the only treatment that has kept her in remission long-term, she said. Thus, her insurer’s argument to deny her the treatment “made absolutely no sense.”

Detrás de uno de los medicamentos contra el cáncer más vendidos del mundo, Keytruda, hay un problema que crece en silencio: su falsificación. El alto precio de este tratamiento de Merck Sharp & Dohme ha empujado a pacientes —e incluso a hospitales— a buscar alternativas fuera de los canales formales, donde terminan comprando viales que parecen auténticos, pero no lo son.
Este problema no empieza en el mercado ilegal, sino en el acceso: en precios que dejan a muchos fuera y en sistemas que no logran responder a tiempo. Ahí es donde la desesperación se vuelve una oportunidad para otros.
