The ICDP @swais2c project has broken a world record! And obtained a critical geological record! 💪Our sediment core measures in at 228m – the longest-ever drilled from under an ice sheet. 🌡️More importantly than smashing world records, it contains an archive of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet spanning the past 23 million years, including warmer times in Earth’s history. 👀While examining the core in the field our on-ice team spotted layers of sediment in the core that reveal there have been times in the past when there was open ocean where currently there is 523m of ice – direct evidence of West Antarctic Ice Sheet retreat. ⏱️ Our international science team is now working hard to pin down what time periods and temperatures these open ocean conditions occurred in, so that we can better understand how much sea-level rise to prepare for under climate change. Our Co-Chief Scientist Molly Patterson summed up the successes of our season in this final expedition update video, filmed on site at Crary Ice Rise before the team returned home from the ice. ICDP Proposal Review: A Strong and Steady Year 📈 We are pleased to announce that we received a total of 22 scientific proposals for the recent deadline, thus maintaining the same robust level of interest as last year. 👏 This year's submissions reflect the diverse and ambitious science our community is pursuing: ✔️ 8 Full Proposals ✔️ 10 Pre-Proposals ✔️ 2 Workshop Proposals ✔️ 2 Land-to-Sea (L2S) Pre-Proposals The consistent number of proposals, particularly the healthy pipeline of Pre-Proposals and the specific Land-to-Sea concepts, testifies to a vibrant and forward-thinking scientific drilling community. We look forward to supporting the next generation of continental drilling research! 🙌 A sincere thank you to all the scientists and teams worldwide who submitted their innovative ideas. The review process is now underway.

CONGRATULATIONS! The @swais2c team wrapped up drilling at Crary Ice Rise with a whopping 228m of sediment core, exceeding the target of 200m! 🥇This is an unprecedented record of the history of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet stretching back millions of years, which will help the world forecast and prepare for future sea-level rise. Initial observations indicate the core includes periods where there has been environmental change in this area during past times of warming. 💪 Obtaining the core was a huge team effort, both on and off the ice. First, the traverse team towed our drill rig and other supplies 1100km across the Ross Ice Shelf, and set up our deep-field camp. The rest of our team then flew in to get drilling and science operations underway. 🕳️ After assembling the drill tent and equipment, the hot water drill team made water from snow, and used this hot water to melt a hole through 523m of ice. The Antarctic Intermediate Depth Drill team lowered more than 1300m of riser and drill string pipe down the hole, then rotary cored, pulling up core in sections up to 3m long. 👩‍🔬Our science team were on hand to describe, image, sample, and carefully process and package the precious core, for further analysis back in New Zealand and labs around the world. When coring was complete, downhole logging was carried out to provide further information about the sediment below the ice. The big pack-down is now underway, while our geophysics team are still working around the ice rise.
