Semay Wu and Seth Bennett, both based in Scotland, are old pals from the Northern regions of England.
They play together as part of Ubu Warp Cheer and New String Collective, but their freely-improvising individual practice reflects a diversity of backgrounds within orchestral, punk, electronica, jazz and uncategorisable musics.

First gig on Sunday afternoon for this new trio! Percussion master Ricky Linn, Paul Greenwood on woodwinds, and me on bass. We've been having an excellent time getting these tunes together, a mix of stuff we did with Scuba, more of an ECM vibe, and some originals thrown into the mix - including this one by Paul. We're at Canvas, Ure Street, Dundee, DD1 5JD this Sunday afternoon between 2 and 4. Entry is free, kids and dogs are welcome, and there is delicious booze, non-booze and Mexican street food available. Be great to see you!

Semay (cello) and Seth (double bass) are originally from opposite ends of the North of England. They met in the noughties when Seth was playing with chamber improv band 7 Hertz (and Orchestre Tout Puissant Marcel Duchamp), and Semay was playing with Homelife (Mayming, and The Earlies among others). They both now live in Scotland, where they have rekindled their musical relationship, playing in New String Collective, Ubu Warp Cheer and now this duo.
Their freely improvised music reflects their diverse backgrounds in orchestral music, punk, electronica and jazz, as well as their delight in playing their instruments, with a genuine commitment to openly exploring anything that might arrive.

First of a planned monthly series of Saturday afternoon gigs @canvasdundee this weekend, gigs programmed by @haystack_monolith and me to share what feels like a nascent community of like-minded musicians on Tayside. This Saturday will feature the incredible @songs_and_illustrations , singing her own songs along with Transylvanian folk songs - I'm hoping she'll invite me to sit in on a few tunes too. Supporting her will be @haystack_monolith , singing his songs about nature, politics and jellyfish, accompanied by me.
These events are kid and dog friendly - we'd like them to be as much hang out as gig, so if you like the sound of it, please bring along anyone you think will enjoy it. Delicious beers, wines and soft drinks are available, and there's usually a street-food pop up outside in case anyone gets hungry.
Music between 2 and 4, entry is free, but we're asking for donations.
Really excited about this one! Duo with the great Don Paterson at Canvas this Sunday evening, 7 - 9pm, free entry. Banish the Sunday evening scaries/celebrate being on your Easter break with us, playing contemporary versions of standards and some more unusual tunes along the way. As well as being a celebrated and hugely accomplished poet, Don is also an incredible guitarist, having played with Tim Garland, Graeme Stephen and Steve Hamilton, amongst many others.
April's edition of the jam will feature a set by a house band featuring Allan McGlone, of the Sunnysiders on alto, Perth guitar star Sean Bissett, with Scuba rhythm team Seth Bennett and Paul Judge on bass and drums. They'll play a house band set from 8.30, followed by an open jam session, at which all jazz instrumentalists and singers are welcome to sit in. Entry is free, so you may as well take a punt! Delicious @71brewing beers brewed in-house, wines, cocktails and @bonaccorddrinks juice. Under 18s are welcome before 10pm too, and the venue is fully accessible. See you down the front! original images by @fotoleist
