As Mother’s Day approaches, I felt called to put my feelings into words about my mother. I wrote this over the course of last week after seeing and knowing a couple of people who have gone through something similar. Grief is a human experience, and I hope that love lights the way for anyone experiencing it heavily around this time. Link in Bio. 🧡

“I no longer want to create love from lack. I want the abundance I have in my body to feel as if it has no choice but to overflow into other areas of my life.” Something from one of my written prayers.

I got a chance to revisit a moment in time over the weekend. My entire team was inducted into the Hall of Fame for winning the 2011 State Championship. Fayette County High School… A place I spent four years of my life dedicated to something bigger than myself. A place where I forged life long memories and connections. A place that I have a new found appreciation for as an adult. I used to avoid this place as I have dealt with the highs and lows of basketball. Some girls played basketball for fun of the sport & some of us played because it was our lives. For a long time, hooping was my life. When things didn’t turn out as expected after my first year of college, I wanted to come back as a person others who knew me could be proud of. What an unnecessary pressure I created for myself. Coach Strickland (🕊️) used to give us this speech about how the ball stops bouncing one day. I didn’t think mine would be as soon as it was, but that was solely my decision. I walked away. I’m actually grateful that I did when I did as I found something so much more important. Time. Time to appreciate the past, be thankful for the present, & stay hopeful for the future. Time to remember how invested people like my mother 🕊️, Coach Strickland, every parent who I carpooled with, every AAU coach, and every friend who watched me play was in making sure I felt supported in all these areas surrounding the game and who made sure that the love for me did not change even though I was moving on. Time to bet on myself. Time to dedicate to things I loved outside of basketball like my art and my family. The transition from basketball was not hard for me. In fact, it was harder for others than it was for me as they had no idea how talented I was outside of this sport. I bet it’s understood now lol. SCAD Grad. Visual Creator. Recording Artist. Business Owner. Above all, an exceptional human being with a lot of love and gifts to give to the world. I was always more than a hooper, but I wouldn’t be who I am without basketball. To my teammates, it’s always love regardless of how we existed as teammates and where life has taken us. It was an honor. Sincerely, #30 🌳💐
