Harlem9 producers, past and present, joined community members on Monday afternoon to honor Woodie King Jr. at his memorial in NYC’s theatre district at the Barrymore where @joeturnerbway is currently playing.
A theatre filled with people who carry Woodie and @newfederaltheatre ‘s legacy then descended upon the streets for hours of community.

It feels even more meaningful to honor someone who meant so much to all of us, as we will this summer.

My grandfather, Bossie Lee Davis Jr., passed away last week. I’m processing in the quiet moments, in the unexpected moments, with happy memories and with questions that may never be answered. But what will stay with me always is Grandpop’s playfulness, his protective nature, his sternness (when he believed it was necessary), and how much he loved life, laughter, good times, good drinks and celebrating. He was a WW2 vet, a postal worker and a New Yorker that moved to Baltimore and would share many stories of his NYC days. He’d constantly ask me, “How’re things going up in NY?”. Any headlines about the city or Harlem, meant a new topic to discuss.
I’m really grateful that I got to see him just a couple weeks prior to his decline. He’d always joke about being my talent manager and would say I owed him a cut of any profits (LOL). So the last time I saw him, I offered him a hundred dollar bill. He looked at it and then pulled back his neck while offering me his very specific suspicious half smirk and squint (the equivalent of an eye roll). And he said, “What? Boy, that ain’t enough. Come back with a better offer” And he laughed. And I said, “Okay, I’ll see what I can do to get my money up and I’ll come back”. That is indicative of what he wanted for his loved ones. He wanted THE WORLD for us. He wanted us to have it all because he believed we deserved it all. And if we couldn’t get that, well then at least we better have a great time!
Thank you Grandpop! I’ve got plenty more to do and when I see you again, I’ll give you your portion. Thanks for the love and the memories!
