ABÁ PARTY - I want to party ( pronounced using the /re mi re mi/ intonation).
This is a project birthed from my childhood, and the excitement of accompanying my mum to every social function she was invited to. I’d say to her as a child “mo fé se abá party” meaning “I want to party” whenever she brought up the fact that we had bills to pay - including my school fees.
All that never really bothered me as thought of attending a party, and eating or drinking to my heart’s content was all I could conjure in my mind. I had a very carefree way of thinking -zero worries. I remember a childhood photo of me in lace, smiling, as if I was promised food in exchange for a photo. I used to hate wearing lace growing up, because it always stung my body; particularly my neck. So I must have been really given an irresistible offer to smile in the pose (last slide).
This outfit is 2 generations old - first my grandmother’s, then my mother’s. Inspired by
@1904lagos and
@brotherslaweee I rung up
@denic_cover_styles to help revamp it into a functional two-piece. I had no better idea than an editorial to relive the ecstasy of ABÁ party. Set design, Art direction, Styling, all done by me; captured by
@damilola.akinboh using a single light source in my sitting room.
Thank you Mama for giving me the freedom to do what I love 💕.
