Hyperion proudly presents the ‘Complete Haydn String Quartets’ on period instruments in one 20CD box. These acclaimed performances from @londonhaydnquartet combine historically informed performance practice with performing editions published during Haydn’s own lifetime. The release celebrates the 25th anniversary of the formation of The London Haydn Quartet. Pre-order the boxset (link in Stories) 🎧 Inside, the 10x double-CD sets are presented in strikingly handsome double wallets throughout, each featuring opulent paintings by Samuel Scott on front and back. Each wallet offers a track listing, with many presenting facsimiles of the original scores and frontispieces, and the 52-page booklet brings together all the individual album booklet essays by Richard Wigmore, from the first release (2007) to the last (2023). “No one who loves this glorious music could have hoped for a better finish … the more I returned to these performances, the more I found myself warming to their fantasy, their disciplined spontaneity and their cumulative insights”—@gramophonemagazine #classicalmusic #quartet #hayden #londonhaydenquartet #boxset

The first of two box sets celebrating one of the most ambitious, and successful, series in the history of classical recording is out on 10th April. This volume, spanning 1991 to 2007, features 130 works from 59 composers, performed by 19 different pianists, luxuriously presented with photographs from the recording sessions, comprehensive indexes and commentaries on the entire journey from those closest to it from the start. The set comes with a special booklet offering introductions from Stephen Hough and Piers Lane, and newly commissioned essays from Andrew Keener (who produced half the series) and project progenitor Mike Spring, whose encyclopaedic knowledge of piano repertoire energised the entire undertaking. The individual wallets offer up the original album artwork, with track listings to the rear, and newly compiled indexes of the entire series are included. “All the most wildly romantic concertos you can think of rolled into one huge pianistic feat”—@gramophonemagazine Pre-order the boxset (link in Stories) 🎧 #classicalmusic #piano #concerto #romanticpianoconcerto #boxset

Tchaikovsky’s ‘Trio in A minor, Opus 50’, was his only work for this combination, and for reasons that appear to have nothing to do with the quality of the music it has been somewhat neglected. It is a wholly original masterpiece, demonstrably Tchaikovsky’s finest chamber work. From the @amsterdam.trio ’s debut recording, which pairs two giants of the late nineteenth-century chamber repertoire: Tchaikovsky’s ‘Piano Trio’ of 1882 and Schoenberg’s ‘Verklärte Nacht’. A multi-year exploration of the buried treasures of Portuguese Renaissance polyphony, courtesy of @ensemblecupertinos . ‘Buried’ is the operative word here: vast swathes of this music were destroyed in the calamitous 1755 Lisbon earthquake, with the catalogue of King John IV’s 1649 music library suggesting that we have barely skimmed the surface of what was lost. Stephen writes: ‘I’ve loved the music of Chaminade since I was a young boy. The wonderful elegance of her piano writing, the sophistication of her harmonic language, the memorable melodies—she has always been part of my musical life. This little piece has her deft fingerprints all over it, ultra-French suavity and sophistication in every bar.’ From @@houghhoughx2 ’s upcoming new piano album, ‘Stephen Hough’s Piano Postcards’. Recorded on Yamaha CFX, with thanks to @yamahapianosofficial . Pre-save, pre-order and start listening 🎧 #classicalmusic #piano #stephenhough #postcards #chaminade

Today you can find on @spotify a single track, the slow movement of Elgar‘s celloconcerto as a prerelease of my latest cd. I am very grateful to @hyperionrecords for having given me the opportunity to record the concerti by Dvorak and Elgar as I wanted to share my slightly different view of these beloved masterworks for cello and orchestra. It would be wonderful if you could listen and possibly download this prerelease (4 min) on Spotify to trick the algorithm and reward Hyperion for having put out yet another Dvorak/Elgar disc 🙏😍 The link for this is in my bio ⬆️ #cello #elgarcelloconcerto #cellist #violoncello

Schoenberg originally scored ‘Verklärte Nacht’ for string sextet in 1899, and arranged it for string orchestra in 1917 and 1943—the last being the version most often performed today. Here the piece appears in a new arrangement for piano trio by the eminent Schoenberg specialist Henk Guittart. From the @amsterdam.trio ’s upcoming debut recording, which pairs two giants of the late nineteenth-century chamber repertoire: Tchaikovsky’s ‘Piano Trio’ of 1882 and Schoenberg’s ‘Verklärte Nacht’. Of Chaminade’s roughly 400 compositions, about 200 were for the piano alone. Among the most popular during her lifetime—and her music sold in huge quantities—was ‘Les sylvains’, which first appeared in 1892. The yearning melancholy of its first subject is contrasted by the quicksilver, iridescent second idea in the minor key. ‘Les sylvains’ was one of the seven pieces Chaminade herself recorded in November 1901, the first female composer ever to record her own music and among the first piano recordings made by a woman. Have you been rediscovering your favourites? We’re celebrating the story of @angejsb ’s Bach Odyssey, which started in 1994 when Ted Perry, founder of Hyperion, first heard her in a recording of the Bach Inventions. Angela recounts what happened next: ‘I’ll take it!’ said Ted Perry over the telephone. ‘But you haven’t heard it yet!’ I exclaimed. ‘I don’t need to—I know it will be good’, was his reply. ‘But only if you agree to record the complete Bach.’ For the first time ever, Angela’s complete recordings of the Bach keyboard works on Hyperion are presented in one collection of 27 CDs covering nearly 25 years. This original-jackets collection with 20-page booklet includes an attractive 2-piece box with lift-off lid: 10x double-CD and 7x single-CD original-jacket wallets with spines. “One of the record glories of our age.”—The Sunday Times Order the boxset (link in Stories) 🎧 #classicalmusic #piano #angelahewitt #bach #thebachrecordings
