Please join us this coming Saturday 19/10 from 3-8pm for A Palm Afternoon Choreographed by Hannah Gieseler and Sandra Teitge [..] tropical tree of the order Palmae; the date-palm, Middle English palme, from Old English palma, Old French palme, both from Latin palma "palm tree," originally "palm of the hand;" the tree so called from the shape of its leaves, like fingers of a hand. The word traveled early to northern Europe, where the tree does not grow, via Christianity, and took root in the local languages (such as Old Saxon palma, Old High German palma, Old Norse palmr) [..] Please join us for a pop-up exhibition and program of palm tree stories, films, sounds, and tea on Saturday, 19 October 2024, 3-8 pm, at ΎΛΗ[matter]HYLE. From 5 to 7 pm, Hannah Gieseler and Sandra Teitge will present their palm tree research (palm insights and readings), which they developed during their Culture Moves Europe research residency in Athens. The afternoon will be divided into five acts, each representing one aspect of the research in a specific format: 3pm palm sounds 4pm palm films 5pm palm insights 6pm palm readings 7pm palm images Feel free to drop in and out as you please. If a book of poems wants to push all of its parts towards coming together as a thing, each piece of it then struggles together towards a singularity of objecthood.  But in the end, it will remain a book.  There's an energy that pulls forward with this tension, where the measure of the book, that informs the way a selection group of poems becomes a body of poetry, is refreshed by trying to become a thing, and nevertheless winds up being another book.  If it, in spite of itself, then becomes a book, as opposed to a thing that is driven by a motivation towards singularity, this is not a failure.   This book has landed itself in a place of wanting to both disseminate poems - there are sonnets in it, and there are prose poems in it - and produce something of a self-made history (there are essays about my art/ sound/ sculptures in it) for experiments in art, sound, and sculpture.  My hope is that this has not wound up being a record of two disparate kinds of activity - poetry on the one hand, and physical media culture on the other - housed between one set of covers.  But there is also no accuracy in saying I want to assert that poetry can be sculpture, or vice versa.  Which is to say that the book doesn't seek after a union between poetry and sculpture, and it doesn't want to convince anyone that the artworks and sculptures that are discussed in its 3rd section are a form of poetry.  Its desire is one that would first of all describe how poetry might be taken as a form of behavior, wherefrom sculpture might proceed.

The open studio/art spaceΎΛΗ[matter]HYLE (hyle.gr) organizes the seminar Art and Iasi, a collaboration of Georgia Sagri, founder of ΎΛΗ[matter]HYLE, with the writer Giorgos-Ikaros Babasakis. Within the duration of four two-hour meetings the workshop aims to examine the relations between Art and Iasis (recovery), inspired by the multi-year research and artistic practice IASI of the artist Georgia Sagri (georgiasagri.com).
