THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR TURNING OUT!! We are so grateful to everyone for coming together for another incredible Nut Fest! There were delicious treats, friendly faces, and a veritable carpet of nut shells by the end of the day. It was such a joy to witness kids become expert nut crackers (squirrels), to learn about acorn processing and the history of nut culture in the Hudson Valley, and to see so many folks getting to try hickory milk for the first time. Most importantly, it just means so much to reconnect and gather in celebration of our native nut trees and the spirit of generosity and abundance they teach. All of this is possible because of our sponsors @hvfarmhub @arthurspointfarm @glynwoodorg and @ccecgc and our incredible venue @rosehillfarm . And we especially would not have been able to do this without the foundational support of @berkshireagventures @breadtreefarms and @crowhillnursery . We cannot thank you enough. To whoever is reading this and to whoever came to Nut Fest: Thanks to you, a tree based food system is now more possible than ever. 📷 by @juulers_row + @awardcasner 🙏

Check out these sick black walnut dyed nut fest shirts made by our deer friend Lou! Lou will be running the merch station where there will be not only shirts for sale, but also shirts and bandanas you can dye or screen print on the spot! We also encourage folks to bring their own t-shirts from home to screen print, and bring any fabrics that could us some rich brown tones for dyeing. Logo design is made by @marisa.rugosa

An acorn donut that’s been in quick development since Sunday. I received a beautiful bag of mahogany acorn flour and a jar of roasted acorns from Mark Ressl of GivingTrees.org. The roasted acorns work well for infusing milk (I’ve been experimenting with cow milk and various plant milks) and the flour is very starchy and light and holds moisture well. Both are going into this acorn donut, which I’m making a bunch of for @hvnutfest on Sunday! & I’ll be writing all about this donut in my newsletter kateray.substack.com Isn’t it wild how dark it bakes up? Looks like chocolate, but it’s not.

We can't tell you how excited we are for the big day, Hudson Valley Nut Fest. The nuts are gathered, delicious treats are being baked, and the nut community is traveling from far and wide to come together and celebrate.  We want to let folks know that Nut Fest is on, rain or shine! As of right now, we are seeing some light rain in the morning, clearing up by midday. In addition to having lots of covered space under popup tents, we will also have a larger tent with patio heaters for our workshops. There will  be hot cider served by @rosehillfarm_ny , chestnog served by @chestnutexperiment , and some free samples of warm hickory milk. There will also be warm roasted chestnuts by @mastwoodfarms and @breadtreefarms , and @kraykray will have a whole spread of chestnut, acorn, and black walnut vegan treats. That and so so much more! See you soon!

Can’t wait to see you there 🌰💖

For those of you who may be wondering, we wanted to share the history of Nut Fest. Pictured is a heart shaped shagbark hickory nut, and the heart of Nut Fest is the trees and the people who see their value and want to share it with the world. Elodie Eid, one of Nut Fest's founders, was deeply inspired by the Nut Bonanzas at Twisted Tree Farm in Spencer, NY. There, she witnessed people discovering the abundance around them in real time, with exclamations like "Wait, you mean I can eat that?" and "Wow, that's the best nut I've ever had!" While Elodie was working at Arthur's Point Farm in Ghent, NY, Mark Phillips of Berkshire Agricultural Ventures approached the APF team with the idea of gathering nut growers together. This led to the first-ever Nut Fest in 2021 at Little Apple Cidery. Antonia Mompalao, Ryan Surrano, and Annabel Roberts-McMichael of Wally Farms, Bug Nichols of Breadtree Farms, and Elodie kept the Nut Fest fire alive in 2022 and 2023 at Rose Hill Cidery. Unfortunately, due to limited financial support and capacity, Nut Fest took a hiatus in 2024. In 2025, Ben Crockett of Berkshire Agricultural Ventures recognized Nut Fest's value as a way to share new pathways for abundance in our region. He approached the organizers asking, "How can BAV support Nut Fest to make sure this event continues?" Thanks to BAV's foundational support and our sponsors, Nut Fest is back and better than ever! We're deeply grateful to continue this work and hope you'll join us in celebrating a nutty future! Thank you to everyone who has helped Nut Fest continue over the years! @breadtreefarms @crowhillnursery @hvfarmhub @arthurspointfarm @glynwoodorg @ccecgc @ediblehudsonvalley

Nut Fest is a celebration of the incredible diversity of local nut species grown and foraged in the Northeastern US. It brings together consumers, producers, foragers, and community members to connect, learn, and enjoy the bounty of regional and climate-resilient tree nut crops. Join them for their communal nut-cracking table, roasted chestnuts, and many delicious nut treats. There will be an acorn processing workshop hosted by Mark Ressl, black walnut dying station, screen printing, a cooking demo by @renee_makes_things , Seed engraving with @sjivetin , all day kids activities, and a myriad of nut enthusiasts to quench any of your burning curiosities. Justin Wexler of @wild_hudson_valley will give a presentation on Indigenous uses of native nuts, and 100% of all donations will go to the Stockbridge-Munsee Community, @no_loose_braids , and @akwesasnefreedomschool . This year, we are so pleased and honored to be hosting “Furrow”, a seed engraving project by Sergey Jivetin @sjivetin . This project highlights and celebrates the wondrous stories of plant seeds and seed-savers, and memorializes these narratives into seeds themselves. Sergey will uncover and highlight the deep connections between plants and humans by engraving seeds from the nut community. Attendees are invited to come witness the engraving, and some attendees maybe be asked to participate in storytelling. We are beyond excited!

We are so pleased to announce that at this year’s Hudson Valley Nut Fest, Justin Wexler of @wild_hudson_valley will be doing a presentation on “Northeastern Native Peoples and Nut Bearing Trees”. The abundance of oaks, hickories, and walnuts in many parts of the Northeast can be directly traced to millennia of indigenous land management practices. For this presentation, Justin Wexler of Wild Hudson Valley will take a crack at describing the many different ways in which Northeastern Native peoples have relied on these beautiful, useful trees. A life-long resident of the Hudson Valley, Justin Wexler has dedicated his life to learning everything he can about the lives, land management practices and ethnoecology of the region's original human inhabitants. Through his organization, Wild Hudson Valley, Justin regularly hosts Lenape/Mohican visitors on ancestral homeland visits from their contemporary displaced communities. He and his wife Anna Plattner also work tirelessly to connect the area’s current residents to nature through guided walks, boat tours, presentations and workshops. Keep up to date on the Hudson Valley Nut Fest 2025 schedule @ hudsonvalleynutfest.org

There is no one we know who has processed more acorns for flour than our dear friend Mark Ressl. Mark also uses the acorn tannins to process deer hides some of which he uses to make beautiful drums. We are so excited that Mark will be leading an acorn processing workshop at Nut Fest this year! Also, Mark and Sage run an inspiring project called Giving Trees . Based in the Hudson Valley, it is a project rooted in reciprocity where buying acorn flour helps plant epic nut trees in the region. They will be one of our vendors this year selling seriously delicious acorn products. Check out Mark’s show this Sunday October 5, 2-5 pm @lifebridgesanctuary in Rosendale, NY. There will be a performance and everyone is invited to join in and play the drums. Hope to see you there! 💚
