My article on BARRY RYAN, nepo baby turned maximalist pop vagabond, is in @shindig_magazine this month! Look at that coat! Barry and his brother Paul are overlooked 60s legends as far as I’m concerned and it was a joy to write about their adventures - “Have Pity on the Boy”, “Keep It Out of Sight”, “Eloise”, “The Hunt”, “Kitsch” and more.
I’m chuffed to have written a mammoth article on the early years of @sparks_official for the new @shindig_magazine bookazine, out today! I was privileged to interview early alumni Earle Mankey, James Mankey and John Mendelssohn for this - and there’s a special contribution from Russell Mael!
It’s a story taking us through madcap home recordings in California, a lost debut album as Halfnelson and two classic early LPs (produced by @the_todd_rundgren and the late James Lowe respectively) that anticipated everything from new wave to indie pop. Oh, and there’s also a papier-mâché ocean liner!
